St. George RoadRunners News Release

ST. GEORGE - Trailing by a run entering the home seventh inning, the St. George RoadRunners stared a second season loss right in the face. Manufacturing runs in many different ways, STG scored six runs after the stretch and held on the beat the Yuma Scorpions by a score of11-6 Wednesday night.

St. George (5-1) continues its best start in franchise history by scoring more than 10 runs for the fifth time this season.

Down 6-5 entering the fateful inning, DH Angel Sanchez led off with a broken bat single to center. First baseman A.J. Valentine squared to bunt but was nailed by the pitch and tensions raised enough that both benches came onto the field, but nothing further escalated. Henry Calderon laid down a perfect bunt for a single to load the bases. C D.J. Dixon was walked to tie the game and chase Yuma starter Javier Ortiz (L, 0-2). Ruddy Yan singled over the outstretched glove of second baseman Ismael Castro to plate Valentine with the go-ahead run. Calderon would score on a wild pitch and 2B Juan Serrano blooped a two-run single over a drawn-in defense pad the RoadRunner lead. Valetine would return to the plate four batter later and be hit by a pitch again, this time for an RBI and the final runs of the inning.

St. George starter Mac Nelson (2-0) earned the win tossing seven innings allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits.

The home club got on the scoreboard first with a Sanchez two-run double in the opening frame.

Yuma cut the lead in half the next inning with a leadoff solo bomb from Carlos Villalobos. The Scorpions took their first lead in the fourth after Reynaldo Rodriguez plated two with a double.

The teams would trade the lead over the fifth and sixth in part to solo homers from Yuma's Carlos Pupo and STG's Alexis Gomez and Serrano.

Relievers Julio Castro and Bartolome Fortunato each pitched a scoreless inning to secure the win for St. George.

The RoadRunners will look to sweep the Scorpions Thursday night beginning at 7:15pm. STG is scheduled to start LHP Luis Gonzalez (1-0) while Yuma has not announced their starter.

Listen to the game on the RoadRunners Radio Network with John Potter beginning at 6:50pm for the Infoweat Pre-Game Show. Yuma fans can listen to the RoadRunners feed on their flagship 560AM KBLU.
