Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Wrapping up a seven-game road trip to open their inaugural season, the Victoria Seals faced the Calgary Vipers for the third consecutive game on Wednesday night. Evan Greusel (0-1) made his second start at Foothills Stadium for the Vipers, while former first-round pick Josh Karp (0-0) made his second appearance of the year for the Seals.
For the first time in the three-game series, the Seals would open the scoring in the top of the first. A double from lead-off batter Chris Van Rossum was followed up by a single from Sergio Pedroza to put Victoria out front 1-0. The Vipers would strike back in the bottom of the frame, though, when designated hitter Drew Miller took a bases-loaded pitch from Karp over the wall in left field for a grand slam, giving Calgary a 4-1 advantage.
The Viper's biggest inning on the night came in the bottom of the third, as Calgary collected six runs off of the Seals' starter. Jorge Mejia started things off with a single, and catcher Rick Guarno picked up the RBI double. Then, Drew Miller reached with a base hit, Mark Okano scored Guarno with a single, followed by another single from Ivan Reyes to load the bases, a walk to Rob Recuenco to bring in a run, and final base hit from Nelson Castro to score one more. Mejia's second at-bat of the inning made it 10-1 with a two-run double.
After a double to the wall from Colin Moro made the score 13-1 Vipers in the bottom of the fourth, Victoria rallied back with five runs in the top of the fifth. With Brian Rios sending a base-hit to left field to load the bases, Matt Kavanaugh scored a run with a sacrifice fly, and third basemen Pedro Montero one more with a double. Bret LeVier then hit the second double in a row for the Seals to score two, and Wilver Perez singled another run to bring the score to 13-6.
But any Victoria momentum was quickly extinguished in the bottom of the fifth inning when right fielder Mark Okano lifted a Graham Campbell offering out of the ball park for a two-run home run. The Vipers added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a double from Moro, a single off the bat of Yuki Matsumoto, Calgary's 13th single of the game from Mejia, and a two RBI double from Guarno.
Despite one run in the top of the ninth for the Seals, Calgary completes the sweep at Foothills Stadium with an 18-7 win over Victoria. Tying a franchise record with five of the Vipers' 21 hits, Jorge Mejia led the offense while added 3 RBI's for Calgary. Victoria's Jamar Hill went 4-for-6 in the losing effort. With both teams using four pitchers in the game, Evan Greusel threw 106 pitches for the win while Victoria Josh Karp falls to 0-1 on the year with the loss.
