Scorpions Drop One To The Flyers

FULLERTON, Calif. - Despite Evan White's impressive six innings, the Yuma Scorpions fell to the Orange County Flyers 7-4 Friday night.

Orange County shortstop Bret Levier had a game-high three hits and batted in two runs as did second baseman Dave Bacani. Levier scored two runs as the Flyers overcame a 4-0 deficit to get their eighth win of the season (8-6).

White gave up seven hits and three runs in six innings, but the Scorpions bullpen couldn?t hold the slim lead.

Rich Pohle's RBI double in the seventh gave the Flyers a 5-4 lead, one they wouldn't relinquish. Reliever Neil Hayes was charged with the loss after giving up the tying and game-winning runs.

Yuma fell to 12-3, still the top record in the Golden Baseball League.

The Scorpions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Yosvany Almario drove in Rich Janeway and Henry Calderon on a single. An inning later, Janeway batted home Mike Goss on a line-drive single down the right-field line to push the score to 3-0.

Janeway scored his second run of the game on an RBI single by Nik Crouch in the fifth inning. The left fielder from Redding, Calif. was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.

After its slow start, Orange County chipped away at the Scorpions? lead with two runs in the fifth inning, one in the sixth and two in both the seventh and the eighth.

Orange County's Robert Salini earned his third win of the season as he went seven innings, striking out four and allowing nine hits.

The Flyers and Scorpions will play a double header Saturday night with game one starting at 5:05 p.m. and the second game starting at approximately 7:45 p.m. Both games can be heard on yumascorpions.com and KBLU 560 AM in Yuma.
