Orange County Flyers News Release
The Orange County Flyers went down early, but used small ball to get back in the game, and then jumped all over shaky Scorpion relief pitching to score a victory over the Yuma Scorpions.
Flyers starting pitcher RHP Robert Salini (3-0) got off to a shaky start, but rebounded to pitch 7 strong innings and the Flyer bats finally awakened as the Flyers pulled off an exciting comeback victory 7-4 over the league-leading Yuma Scorpions on Friday night at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.
The Scorpions capitalized in the 1st inning off Salini who gave up a lead-off walk to Scorpion LF Rich Janeway, hit 3B Henry Calderon with a pitch, and then allowed SS/CF Yosvany Almario to hit a line drive single to left that scored both Janeway and Calderon to give Yuma a 2-0 lead after the 1st inning.
CF Michael Goss, who left the game in the 5th with a back injury, helped the Scorpions add to their lead with a 2-out bunt hit towards 3rd, stole 2nd for his 7th steal of the season, and then advanced to third on a Salini wild pitch. Janeway drove him in with a line drive single off the right field wall as Yuma went up 3-0 after the 2nd inning.
Janeway hurt the Flyers again in the top of the 5th as he hit a line-drive single to right, stole 2nd, then after a Calderon sacrifice fly to right, 1B Nikolas Crouch doubled to left to score and give the Scorpions a 4-0 lead.
Starting in the bottom of the 5th, the Flyers started playing small ball to get back in the game.
Flyers SS Brett Levier started the rally off with a double down the third base line. C Pete Farina got the Flyers on the board with a grounder to short that scored Levier. RF Aaron Davis continued his hot-hitting with a roper down the right field line for a two out double. After a wild pitch by Scorpion starter RHP Evan White (0-0), Flyers 2B David Bacani laid down a perfectly placed bunt towards 1B then raced down the line to beat out the throw and score Davis as the Flyers narrowed the margin to 4-2.
After a Levier hit a seeing-eye single that was trapped by Scorpion LF Maikel Jova to score 1B Peanut Williams in the 6th, Bacani got another RBI single in the 7th to score Farina from 3rd and tie the game.
The Flyers took the lead 5-4 later in the inning on LF Rich Pohle's double to the right field gap to score Bacani from 1st. The double was Pohle's team and league-leading 8th of the season.
After adding a few more insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th off a Levier triple and 3B Mark Okano single, Flyer closer Dave Coggin came in to shut down the Scorpions and clinch the victory in the 9th for his 4th save of the season.
The victory improved the Flyers to 8-6 on the season and allowed them to move within 3.5 games of the league-leading Scorions.
There are still 3 games left in the series between the 2 teams, continuing with a double-header tomorrow starting at 5:00 pm.
