FULLERTON, Calif. - The Orange County Flyers used a 16-1 spurt over two games to sweep the Yuma Scorpions in a doubleheader, 9-5 and 7-5, on Saturday evening in front of 1,512 fans at Goodwin Field.
Alex McRobbie persevered through a tough start and pitched a complete game for his second win of the season in front of a raucous home crowd.
Mark Okano dealt the first blow for the Flyers with a three-run homerun to excite the home crowd in the 4th inning and make the score 5-3 Yuma.
The Flyers tied the game with two runs in the 5th inning with back-to-back doubles from Gabe Mayorga and Dave Bacani.
After a Yuma error put the Flyers in front 6-5, Bacani landed the knockout punch with a two-run triple off Yuma reliever Matt Saucedo. Garry Templeton II contributed to both rallies with RBIs.
Alex McRobbie retired the last 12 batters he faced and struck out seven.
In Game 2, Okano keyed a Flyers offense that pounded out 12 hits and seven runs in a game that featured a beanball war and two ejections.
The Flyers moved within 1 1/2 games of first place Yuma with the win in Game 2.
Nate Holguin pitched the Flyers within an out of a complete game, but he needed Brandon Thompson to rescue the game in the final inning.
Yuma rallied for four runs in the last frame, but Mikael Jova lined out to Bret Levier to end the contest.
Okano went 3 for 3 with two doubles and Dave Bacani added his second three-hit game of the day.
