Orange County Flyers News Release

With emotions running high and tempers flairing, the Flyers continued their winning streak by riding their ace pitcher and getting big hits from the top of the lineup to close in on first place...

Exhasperation began to boil over for the Yuma Scorpions as the Orange County Flyers got another stellar performance by staff ace RHP Reed Dickert (2-1), a big 2-run home run by DH Scott Goodman, and a break-out day from the top of the lineup to cruise to a 6-1 victory Sunday at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.

After giving up a lead-off bloop single to Scorpion 2B Hector Bernal in the 1st inning, Flyers starting pitcher Dickert settled in and dominated the Scorpion lineup over 7 strong innings, giving up only 3 hits and 0 runs to go along with 11 strikeouts.

It wasn't only Dickert that led to the frustration of the Scorpions as the Flyer lineup continued to produce, busting out with 11 hits and 6 runs to give Scorpion starting pitcher RHP Marco Solis (1-1) his 1st loss on the season in his debut in the Scorpion rotation.

The Flyers got on the board in the 3rd inning scoring 3 runs started off by Golden Baseball League batting average and on-base percentage leader RF Aaron Davis reaching base on a Scorpion 1B Nikolas Crouch fielding error. 2B David Bacani continued his recent hot hitting by following with a double that shot off Scorpion 3B Henry Calderon's glove. Davis scored from 3rd on CF Garry Templeton's ground out to short to give the Flyers their first run.

Flyers DH Scott Goodman capped off the inning when he launched a 1-0 pitch from Solis over the right field fence for a 2-run home run, his 2nd on the season, for a 3-0 Flyer lead after 3 innings.

The Scorpions tried to respond in the top of the 4th inning and were helped by Dickert walking the first 2 batters of the inning.

Tempers began to flare after a groundout to Bacani when 1B Peanut Williams tried to throw out Scorpion 3B Henry Calderon at 2nd for a double play. Calderon was called safe at 2nd in close play that brought loud disputes from the Flyer dugout. Flyer pitching coach Mike Smith was the victim of the call as he was thrown out of the game.

The Flyers went on to add another run in the 5th when Templeton and Goodman hit back to back singles and Scorpion C Pascual Matos followed with a throwing error trying to pick off Goodman at 1st base that ended up in right field and allowed Templeton to score from 2nd.

As Dickert was continuing to put zeroes on the board, the Scorpions started to show their frustration from dropping 4 of 5 games to the second place Flyers and seeing their cushion in first place narrow from 3.5 games to 0.5. The frustration boiled over at the plate in the 6th when Scorpion LF Rich Janeway got tossed from the game for arguing his strikeout call to the umpire.

The Flyers added a couple of insurance runs in the 8th when Davis knocked in 2 runs with a single to left. Davis was 1-4 in the game with an RBI and a run scored.

The top of the order for the Flyers came through as the first 4 hitters in the lineup combined for 7 hits, 3 RBIs, and 4 of the 6 runs scored.

The Flyers improved to 11-6 on the season with the win and are now within a half game of the Scorpions for first place. The Flyers have now won 4 in a row and went a dominating 10-2 in their first homestand of the season.

The Flyers now head out on the road for a 3-game series against the third place Chico Outlaws starting tomorrow at 7:05pm.
