Chico Outlaws News Release
ST. GEORGE, UT - Nick Singleton pitched seven strong innings to win up his first victory since August 1, 2006, and Daniel Nava provided the offensive muscle with a pair of home runs as the Chico Outlaws beat the St. George Roadrunners 8-4 Saturday night at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George, Utah...the Outlaws sweeping the four-game series and sending the Roadrunners to their sixth straight defeat.
Things didn't start out well for Singleton, though, as he walked Marcos Villezcas with one out in the bottom of the 1st inning and then surrendered an opposite-field home run to Ryan Stevenson, giving St. George a quick 2-0 lead. Chico answered back in the 3rd, plating a pair of runs off former major league pitcher Mark Woodyard - Eric Pringle scored on David Pierson's base hit to left, and Scott Dragicevich's RBI single to right knocked in Steve Boggs to knot up the contest. The Outlaws went up 3-2 with a run in the 5th - Pringle doubled, went to third on a Boggs infield single and scored on a passed ball.
Chico extended their lead by dialing long distance in the 6th, as Nava led off the inning by sending a Woodyard pitch over the left field wall. Jason Van Meetren then reached base on a wild pitch third strike and was immediately doubled home by Todd Gossage, giving the Outlaws a 5-2 lead. Three batters later Gossage crossed the plate when Pringle delivered a two-out RBI single to left and extended Chico's advantage to 6-2. St. George made the game interesting by scoring a pair of unearned runs off Singleton in the 7th, but in the 9th the Outlaws effectively put the game away when, with Dragicevich aboard, Nava blasted a mammoth home run high over the right field wall to make the score 8-4. Chico closer Todd Gelatka needed all of seven pitches to retire the Roadrunners in order in the bottom of the 9th to lock down the Outlaws fourth straight win.
Singleton (1-1) struck out seven en route to earning the victory; Woodyard (0-3) was tagged with the loss. For the fourth straight night, the Outlaws put up double digits in the hit column - Nava finished with a 3-for-5 performance, tying two club records - most home runs in a game and most total bases (10). Dragicevich also had three hits, while Boggs and Pringle chipped in with two safeties apiece...Stevenson and Johnny Coit each had two hits to pace the Roadrunners 7-hit attack. With the win, Chico improves to 10-6 on the year and are now tied with Orange County for second place in the Golden Baseball League standings, just a game-and-a-half back of the front-running Yuma Scorpions. The Outlaws take Sunday off, but open a seven-game homestand Monday with the first of three against Yuma...rookie right-hander Tyler Pearson (1-1) will make his first professional start for Chico in the series opener. Game time is 7:05pm; Rory Miller will bring you all the action beginning at 6:35pm on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
