Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - Trailing 2-1 in the sixth inning, LF Kipp Schutz drilled a two-run homer to right field to give the IronBirds a lead that they would not relinquish, as Aberdeen defeated the Staten Island Yankees on Monday night 4-3.
IronBirds' RHP Tim Adleman pitched two scoreless innings to start off the ball game. The Yankees, however, got to Adleman in the third. With two men down, LF Shane Brown doubled to right field. C Jeffrey Farnham knocked him in with a single to left, giving Staten Island a 1-0 lead.
The Yankees tacked on a second run in the fourth. With one out, 2B Casey Stevenson worked a walk. After SS Jose Mojica singled, 1B Kevin Mahoney knocked Stevenson in with a single of his own, extending the lead to two.
Adleman left the ball game in the fifth. In 4.2 innings, Adleman surrendered two runs (both earned) on five hits. He walked four and struck out five.
Aberdeen got on the scoreboard in the fifth. With C Joe Oliveira on first and two out, 2B Omar Casamayor drilled a ball off the right-center field wall. Casamayor was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple. Oliveira was able to score, however, cutting the Yankee lead in half.
With the IronBirds trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Aberdeen took the lead. CF Trent Mummey worked a lead-off walk. A batter later Schutz (1) drilled a two-run homer to deep right field. Schutz's first round-tripper of the season gave the IronBirds a 3-2 advantage.
Aberdeen wasn't done. DH David Anderson worked a walk. With two men down, 1B Michael Flacco doubled into the left-center field gap. Anderson scored from first, extending the IronBirds lead to two.
LHP Brandon Holloway (1-1) pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. Yankee starter RHP Shane Greene (0-1) took the loss for Staten Island. Greene allowed all four runs, three of which were earned, on four hits. RHP David Walters (2) pitched a scoreless ninth to record the save.
The IronBirds will host the Yankees Tuesday night in game two of this three-game series. LHP Blake Mechaw (0-0, 16.20) will get the start for Aberdeen. Staten Island will counter with LHP Sam Elam (0-1, 7.36). The ZOOperstars, hilarious animal parodies of your favorite professional athletes, will be around the ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
