Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
The Renegades drop to .500 with the 5-2 loss to the division rival Brooklyn Cyclones Monday night in front of 7,591 fans at MCU Park.
The Renegades top three batters combined to record eight of the Renegades 10 hits. Leadoff hitter Robby Price recorded his best night at the plate going 3-for-5 with two doubles, while Diogenes Luis went 3-for-4 and Burt Reynolds went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
The Renegades 10 hits on the night ties the season record for most hits in a game but the 10 hits didn't come when they mattered most. Hudson Valley left eight men stranded on the base path with four of those men being left in scoring position with two outs.
Despite picking up the loss the Renegades pitching staff put together a solid outing. Starter Devin Fuller (0-1, 4.30) picked up his first loss of the season allowing four runs on nine hits. Fuller's six strikeouts on the night are the most done by a Renegades pitcher this season. The Renegades bullpen added six more punchouts (Steve Hiscock - 4K and Adam Liberatore - 2K) to bring the team total to 12, which is a team high for the season.
The Renegades jumped out to their only lead of the game in the visiting half of the first. Luis scored from second on a Reynolds single to right field to give the Renegades a short-lived one-run lead.
The Cyclones bats answered right back with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. With one out and a runner on first Cory Vaughn homered to left field giving Brooklyn a one-run lead which they would never give up. Vaughn's home run brings his season total to a league leading three.
The Renegades pitching staff would be victimized by the Cyclones long ball one more time before the night came to an end. In the bottom of the fifth, with Brooklyn leading 3-1, Jeff Flagg hit a two-run shot to bring the score to 5-1. Flagg's home run was his first of the season.
The Renegades gave a late inning push but it would not be enough. Reynolds led the eighth inning off with a triple to right field and scored during the next at-bat on a Phil Wunderlich single. Reynolds' run brought the score to its final, 5-2.
The Renegades return to Dutchess Stadium Tuesday night to take on the Brooklyn Cyclones for game two of the three-game series. The Renegades are giving the starting nod to southpaw Joey Dettrich (1-1, 5.79) and the Cyclones will counter with lefty Chris Hilliard (2-0, 1.50). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
