Ocean State Waves News Release
WAKEFIELD, R.I. - Three Mystic pitchers held Ocean State to just six hits and the Schooners were able to hang on for a 3-2 victory Wednesday night at Old Mountain Field.
The Waves (19-13) saw their three-game winning streak come to a close with the loss. The Schooners (16-14) snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory.
Three days after the Waves took a lead in the first thanks to a home run, the Schooners flipped the script on Wednesday. Alex Keller laced the first pitch he saw over the right field wall with one out in the first to make it 1-0 Mystic.
The Waves were able to tie the game in the second. Matt Burgess drew a one-out walk and moved over to third on a single from Dalton DiNatale. Ryan Sweenor then worked a walk to load the bases and Reed Gamache tied the game with a sac fly to right field.
Mystic regained the lead with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Keller doubled to start the fourth, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on Byron Campbell's ground out. Campbell then made it 3-1 in the sixth with a two-out RBI double to left-center.
Ocean State made one final push in the ninth against Mystic closer Conor Gleason. Burgess led off the inning with a hard line drive to right that appeared destined for extra bases but was tracked down by Campbell for the first out. Two batters later, Pat Quinn launched a 3-2 fastball into the trees in right-center to bring the Waves within a run. It was his third home run of the summer.
Brendon Allen was strong in defeat for the Waves, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Jared Habershaw and Nicholas Cooney combined for three innings of scoreless relief. Habershaw struck out the side in the seventh and Cooney struck out the side in the eighth before recording a scoreless ninth as well. Mike Gerber finished with two hits on the night, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Gamache also extended his hitting streak to nine games.
The Waves hit the road on Thursday as they travel to Sanford to face the Mainers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
