Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, RI - The Newport Gulls bounced back from an extra innings loss to Laconia on Wednesday night with an 8-0 win over division opponent Sanford at Cardines Field. A slew of Washington State Cougars turned Gulls broke the contest wide open for the victory in front of a crowd of just under 3,000 in downtown Newport.
The game remained a pitchers' duel for a majority of the contest, with both starters James Mulry and E.J. Ashworth both pitched 5 scoreless innings looking very similar to the Newport and Laconia match-up just an evening earlier.
James Mulry, in his fifth start of the season, went 5 and 2/3 innings for the Gulls allowing 3 hits, walking 3 and striking out 7. Eric Stone would come on in relief of Mulry and eventually stifle the Sanford bats for the remainder of the contest.
Shea Donlin got things started in the sixth with a lead-off double off the right-center field wall to put the go-ahead run on second for Newport. Donlin would advance in the following at-bat in the form of a Cody Jones sacrifice fly to deep right-center field to put Donlin just 90 feet from home plate.
Trace Tam Sing, in his thirtieth start at short for the Gulls, stepped up to the plate and sent a breaking ball from Ashworth hard up the middle up and over the glove of Mainers short stop, Troy Black to score Donlin from third for the first run of the game.
Donlin's fellow Cougar, Ben Roberts, proved clutch for the Newport Gulls again on Wednesday night when he broke the sixth inning wide open for the Gulls with a big 2-run homerun over right-center field to lift Newport to a 3-0 lead over the Mainers.
Newport would keep the pedal to the metal with the bats into the following inning as Tam Sing would pick up a wall ball double off the left-field wall to bring home 2 Gulls in the bottom of the seventh.
Roberts kept the flock's bats alive in the inning with an RBI double - his third of the night - into the opposite field to bring home Tam Sing from third. Returning Gull and NECBL Home Run Derby nominee, Steve Anderson would further the lead over Sanford for Newport looping a pitching into right field to bring Roberts around to score making it 7-0 Gulls. Donlin would ice the victory for the Gulls with an RBI ground out to make it 8-0 Newport in the bottom of the eighth.
Joe Iorio and Kyle McGrath would combine relief outings to get Mulry the win. Iorio and McGrath struck out 7 and allowed 4 hits over 3 and 1/3 innings collectively.
With the win, the Newport Gulls improve to 20-10, while the Sanford Mainers drop to 12-18. The Newport Gulls continue their home stand after an off-day Thursday, with inter-division play against the Danbury Westerners on Friday. Newport will send Mark McCoy (0-1, 2.21 ERA) anticipated to get the start for the Gulls against the neighboring Westerners of Connecticut.
