MILWAUKEE, WI (March 20, 2006) - The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Milwaukee Wave defender, Matt Schmidt, has been named the league's Defensive Player of the Week. Schmidt, the MISL's Defensive Player of the Month in December, wins the award for the second time this season.

The four-year veteran played a big role in Milwaukee's two game sweep of the Chicago Storm and Philadelphia KiXX over the weekend. On Friday, Schmidt contributed one goal, two assists and three blocks in a 10-5 victory over the Storm. He came back with another goal and two blocks as the Wave defeated the KiXX 6-1. In addition to those numbers, his efforts on defense helped to hold both opponents below the Wave's average for the year and Sunday's game represented a season-low for a Milwaukee opponent.

Schmidt, now in his fifth season with the Wave, is having a banner season. He was selected to his first All-Star Game in February and currently leads the league with 38 blocks. The Yale grad is just seven blocks shy of a career-best with five games remaining. His goal on Sunday tied his career-high of 12, set last season, and his 18 points on the year are tops among Wave defenders.

Schmidt made his Wave debut on November 23, 2001. He attended Yale University and was the 33rd pick in the 2000 Amateur Draft. The former Marquette University High School standout won his first championship with the Wave last season as he played in all four games, scoring two goals to go along with one assist and six blocks. Earlier this season, he reached the 150 block mark for his career.

The MISL also named the Goalkeeper and Offensive Players of the Week on Monday. The St. Louis Steamers Bayard Elfvin took home the Goalkeeper of the Week honors while Vicente of the California Cougars was the Offensive Player of the week.

The Wave faces back-to-back games against the first place St. Louis Steamers on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's game (1:05 p.m.) can be heard on the Joy 1340 AM. Sunday's 1:05 p.m. game at the U.S. Cellular Arena is Milwaukee's final home game of the regular season. It will be fan appreciation day and Piggly Wiggly Family 4-Packs are available. All Wave games are broadcast on The Joy, 1340 AM and can be heard via webcast at www.MilwaukeeWave.com. Tickets for all Wave home games ($12, $14, $16, and $20) can be purchased by calling 414-224-WAVE. Wave tickets are also available at Ticketmaster outlets and www.ticketmaster.com. The Milwaukee Wave was established in 1984 as one of six charter members of the American Indoor Soccer Association (AISA). In 2001, the Wave transitioned to being a successful member of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). Through the guidance of head coach Keith Tozer, the winningest coach in Wave and North American indoor soccer history, the Wave has won four league titles (1997-98, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2004-05), seven regular season championships, and has made seven championship series appearances.
