Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ - Sidewinders 3B Jamie D'Antona hit a game tying solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Grizzlies RF Nathan Schierholtz added a solo shot of his own in the tenth to lift Fresno to a 4-2 win on Thursday night. Grizzlies RHP Billy Sadler picked up his third win of the season after blowing the save in the ninth. Tucson left-hander Bill Murphy took the loss after giving up two earned runs on three hits in the top of the tenth.
Fresno jumped on top early in the top of the first with an RBI ground out by 1B Scott McClain, scoring 2B Luis Figueroa who reached on a single. After Tucson tied the game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from CF Jeff Salazar, the Grizzlies added another in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from C Guillermo Rodriguez.
The Sidewinders were able to get the leadoff batter on base in the bottom of the ninth with a single by Salazar, but he was quickly erased after 1B Chris Carter grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.
With two outs, the slumping D'Antona walked up to the plate. D'Antona, who had just two hits in his previous 24 at-bats, took the first pitch deep to left-center field. The home run, his second of the season, tied the game at two, and sent the game into extra innings.
Sidewinders LHP Bill Murphy came in to pitch in the top of the tenth, and had Schierholtz at an 0-2 count before leaving a fastball up in the zone that Schierholtz crushed on a line just over the right field wall. The long ball gave the lead back to Fresno 3-2. They added another insurance run on an RBI single by PH Justin Leone.
The Sidewinders were able to get two runners on base in the bottom of the tenth but couldn't push anything across the plate, stranding both runners to end the game. The Sidewinders dropped to 12-14 on the season. The Grizzlies improved to 15-13.
The Sidewinders will head to Sacramento on Friday for the first game of a four-game roadtrip. First pitch is at 7:05 PM. RHP Enrique Gonzalez (1-2, 4.13) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Left-hander Dallas Braden (0-0, 0.00) will start for the River Cats. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:55 p.m.
