Schenn Excited About WJHC

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

The Schenn family already owns one gold medal from the World Junior Championships, but a second one could be even sweeter.

Luke Schenn helped Team Canada win gold at the World Junior Championships in 2007 when he was a member of the Kelowna Rockets and this year, his younger brother Brayden Schenn of the Brandon Wheat Kings will have a chance to win another one - this time in their hometown of Saskatoon, SK.

Schenn was one of 22 Canadian Hockey League stars that was selected to represent Canada at the World Juniors when they go for a record sixth straight gold medal.

Schenn said that he is anxious to follow in the footsteps of his older brother, who is now a sophomore defenceman in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"He played in that tournament and obviously it was a great feeling to represent your country," Schenn told SHAW TV before the camp started last week. "Growing up, the World Juniors were a thing we looked forward to. He got a chance to play in Europe and now it's on home soil so I'm sure it will be a little different. It's a big thing around Christmas time and with it being in my home town, hopefully I can compete for a spot on the team."

Schenn said that he expects to have a lot of ticket requests when Canada opens the tournament on Boxing Day against Latvia.

"I'm sure a lot of my family and friends are looking forward to it," Schenn said. "There's a lot of hard work going into this now. I've got to be ready to work."

Schenn has already enjoyed an eventful season and it's sure to continue. He was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft last June and last month the Kings called him up for his NHL debut in Vancouver against the Canucks.

"It was right after the SUBWAY Super Series game - I talked to my agent after the game and he said there might be a chance of me being called up," Schenn said. "I thought he was joking there for a second. It took a while for (the paper work) to run through the NHL and the CHL but it worked out. It was a great experience playing on a line with Dustin Brown and Alexander Frolov. It was my first NHL game and I'll never forget it."

Obviously playing in the World Juniors in his hometown was a big goal for Schenn this season and he said that the anticipation for the selection camp has been building over the past few weeks since playing in the SUBWAY Super Series last month.

"It's been a long wait now but I finally got chosen for the World Junior camp," Schenn said. "I've had some good games here with the Brandon Wheat Kings and hopefully that will continue in camp."

After the World Juniors, Schenn will turn his focus to helping the Brandon Wheat Kings get ready to host the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup in May. The World Juniors will be good preparation for playing in the national championship tournament at the end of the season.

"I think playing for the Wheat Kings is how I get focused and prepared for the upcoming camp," Schenn said. "Right now I'm just taking it game by game and trying to get better. There's a lot of skilled guys there and you've got to be ready to compete and play your game."
