Barrie Colts News Release

Barrie, ON - The Barrie Colts are proud to announce today that center Mark Scheifele will represent Canada at the 2012 Canada-Russia Challenge this August.

Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League, announced on Friday the 28-man roster that will compete against Russia to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series.

Canada's roster is comprised of three goalies, ten defencemen and 15 forwards.

The challenge will take place August 9th through 14th with two games in Yaroslavl, Russia and two games in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Scheifele is one of seven players selected to the challenge that also won bronze at last year's World Junior Championship in Alberta.

Selected seventh overall by Winnipeg in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Scheifele played seven games with the Jets to start last season before returning to Barrie where he helped the Colts to a third place finish in the Eastern Conference.

The 6'3" Kitchener resident posted 63 points (23g, 40a) in just 47 games played last season, and also represented Canada at the Subway Super Series.

This summer's Canada-Russia Challenge replaces Canada's National Junior Team summer development camp for this season. The 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship takes place December 26th "" January 5th in Ufa, Russia.

Scheifele was originally drafted by the Saginaw Spirit and was acquired by the Colts at the start of the 2010-11 season. He posted 75 points in 66 games in his freshman year, finishing second in rookie of the year voting.
