Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs 6-2 in Game One of the North Division Series at Haymarket Park on Tuesday night. Will Savage allowed two runs on just four base hits, while Kelly Hunt and Greg Porter each collected four hits. Wichita now leads the best-of-five series 1-0.

Kelly Hunt got the Wingnuts off to a quick start, delivering a two-out RBI single to center field that scored Nick Blasi from third base.

With the bases loaded in the top of the third, Hunt singled to left-center, plating Josh Horn from third. After left fielder Gavin Dickey misplayed Hunt's single, Greg Porter was able to score the Wingnuts' third run of the game.

Gavin Dickey led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to center field, one of only four hits off of Savage in his seven innings of work.

Wichita answered back when Hunt collected his third hit of the game, an RBI double down the left field line, in the top of the fifth.

The Wingnuts extended their lead in the seventh. After there were two outs and no one on base, Hunt, Steve Pearson, and Joe Muich all hit two-out singles, with Muich's driving in the Wingnuts' fifth run.

In the eighth, with two on and one out, Lincoln went to lefty Adam Daniels to face Greg Porter. The 2009 league MVP went after the first pitch and hit a chopper that went off the tip of the glove of first baseman Phil Hawke for an RBI single to make it 6-2.

Savage yielded just the four hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out five. The righty earned the win, his first in seven starts against Lincoln this season and allowed multiple runners on base in just one inning.

Doug Hurn pitched a perfect eighth, while Justin Dowdy slammed the door in the ninth inning to lock down the win. Overall, Wingnuts' pitchers retired the final 12 batters to face them.

The Wingnuts and Saltdogs play game two of the Division Series on Wednesday night at Haymarket Park. Adam Cowart (8-5, 3.05) goes for the Wingnuts against Saltdogs right-hander Jim Paduch (7-5, 4.79) who will be working on three days of rest. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. All the action can be heard locally on 1410AM KGSO and worldwide at www.kgso.com. The Wingnuts return home for game three of the series on Friday, September 4th. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, contact the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-4625.
