Brito, Mallett August American Association Players of the Month

DURHAM, NC - The official statistician of the American Association, PA-Sportsticker, has selected Grand Prairie AirHogs 1B Javier Brito and El Paso RHP Justin Mallett as the Meyvn Baseball Company Batter and Pitcher of the Month for August.

Brito batted .359 with eight home runs, 37 RBI and 22 runs scored in 27 games. He had 37 hits, including 10 doubles, along with 18 stolen bases, a .689 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .414. The Venezuelan native finished the season hitting .316 with 12 home runs, 62 RBI and a .590 slugging percentage.

The 26-year-old was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2002. He spent the past seven seasons with Arizona and accumulated a .305 batting average.

Mallett had a perfect 4-0 record (including one complete game shutout) with a 2.33 ERA for the month of August. In 38 2/3 innings pitched, the resident of Sarasota, FL allowed 10 earned runs on 34 hits with 13 walks and 30 strikeouts. Mallett wrapped up the year going 7-4 with an earned run average of 3.48.

The 27-year-old was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Cincinnati Reds in June of 2003. He pitched the previous six seasons in the Reds organization.
