Sarosy Wins McKenzie Award
August 28, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. . . . The American Hockey League has announced that Jim Sarosy, vice president of communications and hockey relations for the Syracuse Crunch, has been named the winner of the 2001-02 Ken McKenzie Award as the AHL's outstanding executive who has accomplished the most to promote his or her AHL team in the fields of public relations or marketing.
Sarosy was named the Crunch's public relations manager during the 1995-96 season, and has since been responsible for all of the club's media-related activities, successfully increasing the club's presence in all local print, radio and television outlets. He has developed all team publications, and has significantly increased traffic to the team's official web site through his daily maintenance and constant development.
While reinforcing the Crunch's positive image throughout the community and the American Hockey League, Sarosy has developed programs which create additional media opportunities, including the very successful "Crunch Into Reading" series which is aimed at enhancing the reading capabilities and the use of library cards among local youths.
Since being named to his current position in 2000, Sarosy has seen his responsibilities grow to include assisting general manager Vance Lederman with the day-to-day operations of the franchise and overseeing the organization's overall sales and marketing efforts.
"Jim has been a tremendous asset to the Crunch organization," stated Lederman. "It has been a pleasure for me to watch him grow into the first-class hockey professional that he is."
Previous winners of the Ken McKenzie Award include Mike Emrick (1978), Roy Mlakar (1979), Rick Peckham (1982), Dave Strader (1984), John Forslund (1989) and Glenn Stanford (1997).
Ken McKenzie, co-founder and long-time president and publisher of The Hockey News, also served as publicity director for the National Hockey League. McKenzie received the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award in 1997 as he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the writers' category. The AHL's Ken McKenzie Award was instituted in 1977.
