Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Despite a furious third period comeback attempt, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors came up a little bit short against the Sarnia Sting on Sunday afternoon at the Hershey Centre.

Potential No. 1 NHL draft pick Nail Yakupov had a goal and two assists as the Sarnia Sting edged the Majors 4-2 to end a long weekend for Mississauga, as the Majors played their third Ontario Hockey League game in 2 1/2 days.

Craig Hottot added a goal and an assist while Brett Ritchie and Anthony DeAngelo scored the other goals for the Sting, who snapped a two-game losing streak. The Majors (11-6-1-3) wound up settling for three points in three weekend games and slipped into second place in the Eastern Conference standings with the loss.

Dylan DeMelo and Jamie Wise scored the goals for the Majors, both on the power play in the third period as the Majors tried in vein to overcome a 3-0 deficit after two periods of play.

"I thought we were a little awe struck in the first period, and we stood around a little bit too much," Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "We gave them some opportunities and they are a really highly skilled team and they took advantage of them.

"We showed a lot of character in the third period however, trying to come back after playing back-to-back overtime games, so that's something to build on. But it just wasn't good enough as they are a pretty good hockey team, that's for sure, and we played a lot of hockey this weekend."

Rookie Spencer Martin was busy in goal for the Majors as the Sting out-shot Mississauga 33-20. Jordan Mayer and Riley Brace both picked up two assists for the Majors.

Brandon Maxwell made 18 saves in goal for the Sting, who remain in second place in the Western Conference with a 13-3-1-3 record.

Yakupov scored the lone goal of the opening period on a hard shot past Martin at 4:28 and the Sting dominated, out-shooting the Majors 12-7. Sarnia then added two more goals in the second period by Hottot and DeAngelo to take a three-goal lead after 40 minutes.

Power play tallies by DeMelo at 2:32 and Wise at 10:27 made it 3-2, but Ritchie's goal off a turnover at 14:55 completed the scoring.

The Majors will auction off their special Remembrance Day jerseys that they wore in Friday night's game starting on Monday - check www.stmichaelsmajors.com for details. Tickets for all home games are available at www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Hershey Centre box office during regular business hours.

Mississauga hits the road for three games starting Thursday night when they face the Niagara IceDogs in St. Catharines. The Majors then make their annual trek up north for games against the Sudbury Wolves on Friday and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Sunday.
