Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors are teaming up with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive and general community event on Saturday, January 19 from 2:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Kaiser Permanente Arena (140 Front Street).
"Blood saves lives, it's that simple," said Jim Weyermann, President of the Santa Cruz Warriors. "There is nothing more important than having enough blood available to treat emergency cases of violence and accidents. That's why we are putting the weight of our team behind this blood drive. It is critical that we are able to meet the need and help save lives."
Blood donors at this special event will have an opportunity to meet Warriors players and all presenting donors can enter a drawing for a limited edition Santa Cruz Warriors T-shirt signed by the entire team.
The winter months are traditionally a difficult time for the Red Cross to collect blood. Vacations, illnesses and inclement weather work together to prevent regular blood donors from giving this time of year.
"During winter, we really rely on local organizations stepping up to help ensure that blood is available year-round," American Red Cross Northern California Blood Services Region CEO Jeff Meyer said. "The Santa Cruz Warriors' willingness to sponsor this blood drive speaks to their passion for community service and desire to help others."
Representatives from the American Red Cross Santa Cruz County Chapter will be on-hand to conduct hands-only CPR demonstrations and will give talks on disaster preparedness. Drawings will be held every hour for individual disaster kits. The event also will feature a group of local Superstorm Sandy volunteer responders, who will talk about what it's like to be deployed to a disaster.
Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), meet height and weight requirements (at least 110 pounds based on height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code SCWARRIORS.
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. The Santa Cruz Warriors are the official NBA Development League affiliate of the Golden State Warriors. Tickets are currently on sale at www.santacruzbasketball.com or Santa Cruz Warriors headquarters at 903 Pacific Avenue.
