Santa Cruz Warriors Fall to Bakersfield in First Loss of the Season

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Jam beat the Santa Cruz Warriors 102-95 Monday night, marking the first loss for the Warriors on the young season.

Santa Cruz was led by Travis Leslie, who recorded his first double-double of the season with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Bakersfield's Brian Butch also logged a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, while John Jenkins, on assignment from the Atlanta Hawks, scored a game-high 22 points for the Jam.

The Warriors out-rebounded the Jam 54 to 38, but a key difference in the game was turnovers. The Jam capitalized by scoring 27 points off of 29 Warriors turnovers. Bakersfield lost the ball 17 times.

There were 16 lead changes and 13 ties in the contest. Santa Cruz led by as much as 10 in the first half, but Bakersfield kept it tight until the closing minutes of the fourth quarter. After the Warriors went up 92-90 with 3:58 left, the Jam went on a 12-3 run to end the game, with Kendall Marshall, on assignment from the Phoenix Suns, leading the way with 6 points in that time span.
