Sanmartin Stifles Redbirds in 5-0 Triumph

May 29, 2019 - Florida State League (FSL) - Daytona Tortugas News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - LHP Reíver Sanmartín made sure his Florida State League Pitcher of the Week award didn't change his results. The 23-year-old tossed six scoreless innings, as the Daytona Tortugas blanked the Palm Beach Cardinals, 5-0, on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

With zeroes across through two, Daytona (29-23) gave Sanmartín a lead to protect in the third. LF Drew Mount (2-5, R, RBI, SO) reached on an error with one out and advanced to second on a single by 3B Jonathan India (2-5, SO). After Mount swiped third, 2B Alejo Lopez (0-4, RBI, BB, 2 SO) hit a slow grounder to second. The infielder's only play was to first, as Mount scored from third to put Daytona in front, 1-0.

In the sixth, the Tortugas added to their lead with the long ball. On the third pitch of the frame, CF Stuart Fairchild (1-4, R, HR, RBI, BB) clocked a deep drive to left. The ball sailed over the left-field fence for a solo home run - his third of the year - to put the visitors up by a pair, 2-0.

Daytona added more insurance in the seventh and eighth. LF Lorenzo Cedrola (2-3, R, 3B, RBI) was plunked to lead off the seventh and scooted to second on a wild pitch. After a ground out moved him to third, Mount drove him in with a single to center. In the eighth, 1B Bruce Yari (1-4, R, SO) and DH Hendrik Clementina (1-4, R, SO) reached on back-to-back one-out singles and moved to second and third on a ground out. With two away, Cedrola hit a slow roller to short. The throw to first was late and wild. The 21-year-old was credited with an RBI infield single - with the second runner crossing on the error - to put the Tortugas ahead, 5-0.

Sanmartín (6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 SO) was stellar again on Wednesday night. The southpaw hurled six spotless innings - extending his scoreless streak to 15.0 frames dating back to May 18 - to collect his second win of the season.

It was a tough defeat for Palm Beach's (31-20) RHP Tommy Parsons (5.0 IP, 3 H, R, 2 BB, 4 SO). The Columbus, Ohio native yielded just one unearned run over five innings but suffered his first FSL defeat.

Daytona will attempt to complete the sweep on Thursday night with RHP Ryan Lillie (1-3, 3.46 ERA) expected to take the ball. Palm Beach is projected to counter with FSL Mid-Season All-Star RHP Alex Fagalde (5-3, 2.40 ERA).

The Tortugas Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 6:15 p.m. ET, leading up to the 6:30 p.m. ET start at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Thursday evening's contest can be heard on daytonatortugas.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.

Following the six-game road swing, the Tortugas will return to The Jack for a seven-contest homestand of their own, starting with four contests against the Bradenton Marauders, High-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The series begins on Monday, June 3 with a Belly Buster Monday presented by Marco's Pizza. Starting at just $13, fans can enjoy all-you-can-eat hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, and popcorn along with their game ticket.

Multi-game plans and single-game tickets are still currently available and can be purchased online at www.daytonatortugas.com, or by calling the Tortugas' Ticket Office at (386) 257-3172.
