
Sanford Wins Second Game to Split Doubleheader against Upper Valley

SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Mainers played host to the Upper Valley Nighthawks for a doubleheader on Tuesday at Goodall Park. In the first game, the Nighthawks held on for a 2-1 win in extra innings. In the second game, the Mainers offense led the team to a 7-2 win to split the doubleheader.
In the opener, the Mainers fell behind in the second inning as starting pitcher Alex McKenney (Maine) only went 2.2 innings, giving up four hits, one earned run, walked two and three strikeouts.
Sanford was able to tie the game in the fifth inning, when Jonny Barditch (Manhattan) got a basehit and came around to score on Cam Ridley's (Eastern Kentucky) infield single to tie the game at one.
Brian Craven (Davidson) pitched a clean seventh inning to force the game into extra innings. However, he ended up taking the losing decision when the automatic runner was able to score. Upper Valley then pitched stranded the game-tying run on base in the bottom of the eighth to hold on to a 2-1 win.
In the second game, Sanford sent Jacob Edwards (UNC-Asheville) to the mound. Edwards earned the winning decision after four innings, giving up four hits, two earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts.
The Mainers again fell behind, but then stormed back to score seven unanswered runs to roll to a 7-2 win. Offensive highlights included a three-run home run by Mitch Moralez (Utah Valley) to take the lead, a Ridley sacrifice fly and another RBI single from Moralez.
The Sanford bullpen shut down Upper Valley as Beau Dana (Dickinson College), Gavin Hinchliffe (Delaware) and Joe Joe Rodriguez (St. John's) combined for a one-hit shutout with three strikeouts to close out the 7-2 win.
Sanford plays another home game on Wednesday against the Winnipesaukee Muskrats at Goodall Park at 6:30 PM.
