NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - The Sanford Mainers played a doubleheader on the road against the North Adams SteepleCats on Friday at Joe Wolfe Field. Sanford won the opener 7-3, and dropped the nightcap 5-1 for a split on the day.

In the first game, Garret Keough (Georgetown) made the start and earned the winning decision. In four innings, Keough only allowed two hits, three earned runs, three walks and struck out three in the win. The bullpen took over and shut down the SteepleCats in the late innings, with Dom Freeberger (UNC-Asheville) and Brian Craven (Davidson) not allowing any runs or hits in the final three innings.

The Mainers offense got it started quickly with three runs in the first inning. Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt) and Mitch Moralez (Utah Valley) hit two consecutive doubles, and other runs coming in on a wild pitch and an error that scored Freddy Rojas Jr. (UT-Rio Grande Valley) for a 3-0 lead.

Sanford doubled it up in the third inning with three runs on a groundout off the bat of Shane Paradine (Stony Brook), a throwing error by the North Adams pitcher and a Jonny Barditch (Utah) single. The outburst gave Sanford a 6-0 lead. One more run came across off the bat of Paradine hitting a single. This turned out to be enough for a 7-3 win, Sanford's fourth win in a row.

The second game got off to a slower start for the Mainers offense, as they could only muster two hits in the game from Freeberger and Ubaldo Lopez (Georgetown). One run crossed in the final inning on an error by North Adams.

Blake Bennett (UMass) got his first start of the year and limited hard contact. In 4.1 innings, Bennett only allowed two hits and gave up three earned runs, three walks and struck out one in a tough losing decision. Beau Dana (Dickinson) gave up three hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out two following Bennett out of the bullpen.

North Adams scored in the second to take a lead, but blew the game open with four runs in the fifth inning to hold on to a 5-1 win.

The Sanford Mainers return home for the next two days with one game Saturday against the Keene SwampBats, and a doubleheader against the North Shore Navigators on Sunday at Goodall Park.
