
Sanford Wins First Game, Splits Doubleheader at Upper Valley

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. - The Sanford Mainers played a road doubleheader on Monday night at Maxfield Sports Complex against the Upper Valley Nighthawks. The Mainers won the opener 3-2, then fell in the second game 7-4 for a split on the day's games.
Jacob Edwards (UNC-Asheville) made the start in the first game for the Mainers and turned in a strong start. Edwards went five innings, scattered seven hits, two earned runs, one walk and struck out four.
After the Nighthawks took the lead in the first, the Mainers came back to take the lead in the fourth inning with Freddy Rojas Jr. (UT-Rio Grande Valley) driving in two runs with a single to make it a 2-1 Sanford lead.
Trevor LaBonte (Maryland) came out of the bullpen for Sanford and held Upper Valley at bay. He earned the winning decision after two innings of shutout ball, giving up one hit, no walks and one strikeout.
In the last inning of a tie game, Rojas came to the plate to lead off and sent a ball over the center-field wall to give the Mainers a 3-2 lead that they would hang on to for a win.
In the second game, the two teams went back and forth in the first three innings. Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt) scored after a lead-off triple, Derek Smith (Bryant) brought home Mitch Moralez (Utah Valley), and Rojas doubled in another run for an early 4-2 lead.
The game turned in the bottom of the third when Upper Valley scored four runs on five hits to take a lead that they would not give up. Brian Craven (Davidson) through a shutout two innings to end the game, only giving up two hits and striking out three. The Nighthawks closed out the Mainers in the seventh for a 7-4 win.
The Sanford Mainers return home on Tuesday for a game against the Keene SwampBats.
