KEENE, N.H. - The Sanford Mainers took on the Keene SwampBats at Alumni Field on Tuesday night. Behind three home runs, the Mainers beat the SwampBats 7-4.
John West (Boston College) made the start for Sanford and limited the damage on the bases in a no decision. In four innings, West gave up five hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out three. Joe Joe Rodriguez (St. John's) followed West and struck out a pair of Keene batters in his 2.1 innings.
The home runs for the Mainers started in the second inning, when Ubaldo Lopez (Georgetown) sent a ball over the wall for a two-run bomb and Sanford's opening runs. Two innings later, Shane Paradine (Stony Brook) hit a two-run homer into center field again to give the Mainers a 4-1 lead.
Keene was able to score runs to draw the game within one headed into the sixth, when the biggest Sanford inning of the night gave the team enough for a 7-4 win. Freddy Rojas Jr. (UT-Rio Grande Valley) led off the inning with a solo home run, then Derek Smith (Bryant) and Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt) drove in a run each on singles.
Trevor LaBonte (Maryland) earned the win in relief as he closed out the SwampBats in the late innings. LaBonte pitched the final 2.2 innings, striking out three batters, walking one and giving up one hit to secure the 7-4 victory.
The Sanford Mainers are on the road again tomorrow against the North Adams SteepleCats for a doubleheader.
