MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Sanford Mainers traveled to the Montpelier Recreation Field to take on the Vermont Mountaineers on Saturday for one full game and one game that was previously suspended. In the first game, the Mainers came back from a 4-2 deficit to win 9-7, and lost the second on a walk off 3-2.

John West (Boston College) was the first pitcher for the Mainers in the resumed game, and held the Mountaineers at bay for a chance to win. After 3.1 innings, West earned the win only giving up three hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out a season-high five batters.

Sanford completed the comeback with a five-run eighth inning with early hits from Derek Smith (Bryant) and Pierce Gallo (Clemson), the latter of which brought in a run on a single. Two batters later, Mitch Moralez (Utah Valley) smoked a three-run double to give the Mainers the lead at 9-7.

Trevor LaBonte (Maryland) came on for the final five outs to earn the save, only allowing one hit and no runs.

In the second game, Kyle McKernan (Virginia Tech) had the start and pitched well for five innings. McKernan was lifted after only giving up three hits, two runs, one earned run, no walks and striking out six.

The Sanford offense got out to a quick start in the second inning with Dayne Leonard and Shane Paradine (Stony Brook) were able to score the opening runs on an error by the Vermont shortstop and take a 2-0 lead.

Another offensive leader included Ubaldo Lopez (Georgetown) who was the lone Mainer hitter with two hits in the game.

Gavin Hinchliffe (Delaware) pitched a clean inning of relief with two strikeouts to hold a tie to the final inning.

In the final inning, Vermont's Casey Mayes was able to score the game winning run on a throwing error after Craig Larsen put the ball in play, securing a 3-2 win.

The Sanford Mainers are off until Tuesday for the NECBL All-Star Break, as the Upper Valley Nighthawks come to Goodall Park for a 6:30 P.M.
