Sanford Mainers News Release
KEENE, N.H. - In their first road trip of the season, the Sanford Mainers took on the Keene SwampBats. After a strong start from Jacob Edwards (UNC-Asheville) and back-and-forth play in the late innings, David Bryant scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 4-3 win.
Edwards baffled SwampBats hitters in his first start of the season, only allowing one hit in five shutout innings of work, along with six strikeouts. At one point between the first and fifth innings, Edwards retired 12 straight Keene hitters to keep the shutout alive.
Sanford took a lead right away in the top of the first inning when Calvin Hewett (Vanderbilt) drove home Cam Ridley (Eastern Kentucky) with a RBI single. The lead was later extended in the sixth inning with a lead-off triple off the bat of Derek Smith (Bryant), and then came in to score after a Ryan Turenne (Maine) groundout.
Edwards was dueled by Michael Bacica who turned in a outstanding performance of his own. In his 5.2 innings of work, Bacica struck out eleven Mainers batters, only allowing two runs, four walks and two hits. Keene took the lead in the seventh inning with a two-run single by David Bryant.
In the ninth inning, the bottom of the lineup spurred a comeback with early hits in the frame from Marty Higgins (St. John's) and Jonathan Barditch (Manhattan College). After Ridley was plunked to load the bases, Higgins scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at three.
The bottom of the ninth saw Keene put the first two runners on, and then David Williams drove home the game-winning run for the 4-3 win.
Sanford hosts Keene for the second half of a back-to-back with the SwampBats at Goodall Park.
