Sanchez strong in Hens fourth straight loss May 29th 2017, 02:32, by Lucas Rains
For the third straight game in the series, the Toledo Mud Hens offense was stagnant, collecting just four hits in a 3-0 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders on Sunday.
In his second start with Toledo, Anibal Sanchez began the contest with four hitless and scoreless innings. He would run into a bit of trouble in the fifth, allowing three hits and a run to end his day. Sanchez finished with 4.2 innings pitched, with one walk, and five strikeouts.
Brady Lail got the start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and finished with six shutout innings, allowing just three hits, two walks, and struck out six to earn the win.
Following the first inning, Sanchez walked Tyler Austin to start the second but quickly escaped the mini jam when he struck out Ji-Man Choi and saw Omar Infante turn a nifty 4-3 double play behind him.
The Hens had their first real scoring threat in the bottom of the fourth when Efren Navarro doubled deep of the wall in left center. However, Jason Krizan lined out to second and Navarro was doubled off second base to end the inning.
The Railriders broke into the scoreboard in the fifth as Austin led off with a bloop hit. Sanchez struck out the next two batters before allowing another soft hit to left to Mason Williams . Donovan Solano singled just past third baseman Logan Watkins to bring home Austin. Victor Alcantara came on in relief of Sanchez and induced a groundout to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Toledo loaded the bases but could not cross home plate. Jeff McVaney led off with a walk and Argenis Diaz singled with one out. With two outs, Bryan Holaday walked to load the bases. Lail got Matt den Dekker to pop out to end the inning and keep the Hens off the scoreboard.
Scranton added a run in the sixth to extend its lead to 2-0. Dustin Fowler doubled with one out and scored on a Gleyber Torres single against Alcantara.
Fowler and Torres duplicated their sixth inning efforts in the eighth to put the Railriders up 3-0. Fowler doubled and Torres knocked him home for the second time in the game.
Alcantara pitched 3.1 innings in relief, allowing five hits, two runs, and struck out three batters.
Jason Gurka and Giovanny Gallegos combined to pitch scoreless seventh and eighth innings, allowing just one hit out of the Toledo offense.
Edward Mujica pitched the top of the ninth for the Hens and retired the Railriders in order.
In the bottom of the ninth, Gallegos finished off the Hens with a 1-2-3 frame to give the Railriders the series victory with still one to play tomorrow.
The series finale on Monday is set to start at 6:05 p.m. with Drew VerHagen toeing the rubber for Toledo.
