Bats fall victims of the sweep in 3-1 loss May 29th 2017, 20:05, by Logan Jones
LEHIGH VALLEY, PA - The Louisville Bats (16-33) fell, 3-1, to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (35-15) on Monday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park. This four-game sweep marks the third time that the Bats have been swept this season, and the first time to have ever been swept by the IronPigs.
Louisville sent left-hander Cody Reed (1-3, 4.01 ERA) to the mound to start the game, and his afternoon finished after matching a season-high seven innings pitched, and he surrendered nine hits, three runs, and four walks, while striking out four batters.
The IronPigs opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a Jorge Alfaro double that scored Daniel Nava, who reached on a ground rule double.
Lehigh Valley held onto this 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third inning, when they tacked on another run with a pair of base hits. Harboring this 2-0 edge in the bottom of the seventh, Lehigh Valley collected three hits and knocked in a run, extending their lead to 3-0.
In five of the first six innings, Louisville put the leadoff batter on base, however the offense struggled to produce each time, leaving the runners stranded.
Facing a 3-0 deficit in the top of the eighth, Hernan Iribarren smacked a two-out double to deep centerfield, and Brandon Dixon followed with a walk. Rob Brantly then singled on a sharp line drive to center, bringing in Iribarren for the Bats first run of the game. However, the momentum was stifled soon after and Louisville ended the inning trailing 3-1.
Right-hander Kyle McMyne came in to pitch in the bottom of the eighth for the Bats, and held Lehigh Valley scoreless, bringing Louisville into the top of the ninth with a two-run disadvantage.
The Bats had a quick three-up, three-down inning in the top of the ninth, and took the 3-1 loss to the IronPigs.
The Louisville Bats will return home to Louisville Slugger Field beginning Tuesday for a six-game homestand that starts against the Gwinnett Braves. Tuesday's starter for the Bats has yet to be announced, while right-hander Lucas Sims (4-2, 3.42 ERA) will take the mound for the Braves.
