KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Sixto Sanchez dealt six innings of one-run ball on Friday night, but the Clearwater Threshers suffered their first shutout of the season in dropping the series opener, 1-0 to the Florida Fire Frogs at Osceola County Stadium.
Sanchez (2-3) permitted just a run on five hits and a walk, matching a season-high with seven strikeouts. The right-hander hurled 101 pitches on the evening, 62 of which were strikes.
The only run of the ballgame crossed with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.
Florida (16-23) knocked a pair of two-out hits, after Braxton Davidson got it going by doubling to right-center on a two-strike pitch. Ray-Patrick Didder brought him in with a single up the middle to put the Fire Frogs up, 1-0.
Jeff Singer tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Sanchez, recording a pair of strikeouts.
Clearwater (16-25) threatened in the ninth, when Austin Listi singled sharply past third and Darick Hall pulled one through the right side. Devan Watts finished it off, getting Edgar Cabral to ground into a double play to end the ballgame.
Listi reached twice on the night with a walk and a single, extending his on-base streak to 22 consecutive games. Cabral and Henri Lartigue each pushed their own on-base streaks to 14.
Tucker Davidson (2-4) earned the win for Florida, teaming up with Mauricio Cabrera, Connor Johnstone, and Watts for the four-hit shutout.
Game two is set for Saturday at 5 p.m., as Bailey Falter takes the hill opposed by Joey Wentz. The game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com starting at 4:45 p.m.
