San Jose Giants News Release

MODESTO - The San Jose Giants saw their team record road winning streak end at 16 games with a 9-4 defeat to the Modesto Nuts on Monday evening at John Thurman Field. The Nuts never trailed and took control of the game with a four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to claiming the series opener. The loss was San Jose's season-high fifth in a row and dropped their overall record to 50-24.

Alex Burg (2-for-4, 2B, HR, RBI) hit his third home run of the season and Tommy Joseph (2-for-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI) doubled twice to lead the Giants offensive attack.

Zack Wheeler (6-3) surrendered a season-high six runs (all earned) on seven hits over five innings of work to take the loss. Wheeler walked two and struck out six. All six runs scored with two outs in an inning.

The Nuts jumped out to an early lead with single runs in the second and third innings against Wheeler. In the bottom of the second, David Christensen belted a two-out, solo homer to deep left center. Then in the third, Delta Cleary, Jr. drew a two-out walk before coming home when the next batter, Angelys Nina, tripled off the fence in right center.

Burg brought San Jose back to within 2-1 when he led off the top of the fourth with a home run off the scoreboard in left center field.

Wheeler tossed a scoreless bottom of the fourth, but ran into trouble in the fifth. Jose Gonzalez singled with one out to start the rally before advancing to third when Scott Robinson blooped a single into shallow right center. Robinson then took second on the throw. Wheeler recovered to strikeout Cleary, Jr. for the second out of the inning, but Nina reached on an infield single to the third base side of the pitcher's mound plating Gonzalez to make it 3-1. Nolan Arenado was up next and he lofted a shallow fly ball down the right field line that dropped in for a double as Robinson and Nina both scored extending the lead to 5-1. Kiel Roling followed with a double off the fence in left center to bring home the fourth run of the frame.

Tom Vessella (2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) relieved Wheeler to begin the bottom of the sixth and after a scoreless inning of work, surrendered a single run in the seventh when Arenado delivered a one- out, RBI single.

The Giants rallied in the top of the eighth against Modesto reliever Mike Marbry scoring three runs to cut the lead in half. After Marbry retired the first two batters of the inning, Jarrett Parker singled and then Ryan Cavan lined an RBI double into the right center field gap. Jose Flores followed by drawing a walk before Joseph stepped to the plate and doubled off the fence in deep right center to score two more runs and make it 7-4. Marbry though settled down to strikeout Luke Anders to end the inning and leave the potential tying run in the on deck circle.

The Nuts took back the momentum in the game with two runs in the bottom of the eighth against Jose Valdez (1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO). A walk to Christensen started the frame before Josh Rutledge reached on a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third while Christensen scored on Robinson's sacrifice fly to left. Cleary, Jr. then extended the lead to 9-4 when he connected for an RBI double down the left field line.

Modesto starter Chad Bettis (5-4) earned the win after tossing seven solid innings with just one run allowed. Bettis allowed four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts during his stint on the mound. Prior to Burg's home run, Bettis had retired eight consecutive Giants hitters. He then struck out six over his last three innings of work, including three punchouts in the top of the seventh.
