Bakersfield Blaze Falter Late

June 28, 2011 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

A close ballgame turned ugly late, as the Stockton Ports pulled away from Bakersfield 14-4 in an afternoon tilt at Banner Island Ballpark.

For 7.5 innings, the contest was hotly contested, as the Blaze scored twice in the 2nd inning off eventual winner Dan Straily (W, 6-5) to take an early 2-0 lead. But, similar to last night, the Ports would punch back - a few singles, walks, errors and passed balls led to 2 runs in the first 4 innings, and that brought Stockton even. A solo homer gave Stockton a narrow 3-2 lead, and a key 2-run double by Conner Crumbliss put them up 5-2 in the 6th.

The Blaze would not go down without a fight, as Bakersfield pushed a run across in the 7th to cut the deficit to 2. Stockton and Bakersfield traded shots for the next inning, and the game went to the bottom of the 8th with Stockton leading 6-4. In his first appearance for the Blaze, however, Jason Braun would get battered, facing 10 men and allowing 9 of them to reach base - Stockton sent 12 men to the plate in the inning, scored 8 runs, and putting the game away a half inning early.

Mark Serrano (L, 2-2) suffered the defeat for Bakersfield despite pitching relatively well once again.

Tomorrow's game is back in the evening once again - 7pm start and will be broadcast live by Dan Besbris on BakersfieldBlaze.com.
