Blaze Jinxed in 8-6 Loss

June 28, 2011 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

It wasn't Friday the 13th, not by a longshot, but it sure felt as spooky in Stockton as the Blaze fell to the Ports 8-6.

Bakersfield opened the scoring with 2 runs in the first on an RBI single and the first of 2 homers by Brodie Greene, but Stockton would counter with 1 of their own in the second when Rashun Dixon went yard.

Then things got weird. In the bottom of the 4th, the Ports loaded the bases with nobody out, and Ravin got the groundball he needed when Dusty Coleman rolled over one towards 3rd. The ball took a low hop, however, going between Frank Pfister's legs, and the error led to 2 Stockton runs and a 3-2 lead.

Greene's second homer would put the Blaze up 4-3, but Stockton had a goofy answer. In the 6th, Stockton got 2 men on base with 1 out for Conner Crumbliss. Again, Ravin made the pitch he needed, and Crumbliss hit a lazy flyball to center. Unfortunately, LaMarre would lose the ball in the night sky, and Crumbliss's pop up would drop untouched for an RBI double. Not to be outdone, Myrio Richard skied one to the same spot, and again, LaMarre couldn't find it, and the back-to-back lost flies would result in 3 Stockton runs and a 6-4 lead.

Again, the Blaze would fight back - a Kevin Coddington solo homer and some A.J. Means speed would knot the game at 6 going into the 8th. In the bottom half, Drew Bowman (L, 2-2) issued a lead-off walk, and some timely hitting from Stockton put them up by a pair, and Stockton's closer Jose Guzman (W, 2-1) would get the final 4 outs for the win.
