San Jose Skyrockets blast off their new mascot Rocky
September 9, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Minot Skyrockets News Release
San Jose, CA. The ABA San Jose Skyrockets have successfully launched their new mascot, "Rocky" during the San Jose Giants' season finale. "As a single-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants in the South Bay, the San Jose Giants cater to families and kids, which are the same target demographics as the Skyrockets and the ABA. So, when we were invited by Eric Dahl of KNTS 1220AM radio, which broadcasts the SJ Giants, it made sense to co-promote our team with them," stated Kazumi Hasegawa, CEO and President of the Skyrockets.
Kids and adults alike were invited to shoot a basket with the ABA mini-balls from 10 feet away into a hoop 6 feet high. Given three tries, if they scored a basket, they were awarded a Skyrockets T-shirt. Within a 3-hour time span, 200 T-shirts were given away to enthusiastic fans. Having Rocky pleasing the crowd simply added to the attraction.
"We were extremely excited about introducing Rocky today. He is shaped like a rocket, yet has a cheerful and friendly personality. He was a hit with the crowd, especially children who laughed and played with Rocky, as if they had made a new friend. His enthusiasm and ability to interact with the crowd will continue to translate into a family fun environment," said James Hasegawa, the Skyrockets COO and Executive Vice President. "Our intern staff did a fabulous job working the crowd and catering to the kids. We look forward to more co-promotional opportunities to reach out to the San Jose community as we prepare for our upcoming season."
