Coupled with Chicago's loss at Los Angeles on Jun. 2, the SaberCats now hold the top seed in the American Conference playoff race and control their own destiny for home-field advantage in the postseason. The SaberCats head to Salt Lake City for a game with the Utah Blaze on Saturday, Jun. 9 as they play their final three regular season games against Western Division foes. FSN Bay Area will show the game live and in HD and San Jose's flagship radio station KNBR 1050 will broadcast live from EnergySolutions Arena. Mark Grieb completed all 13 of his second half passes and the SaberCats forced a Predators turnover on downs on the final possession to post their 7th consecutive win. James Roe became the 16th player in league history to top the 8,000 mark in career receiving yards and Clevan Thomas snared his 38th career interception to move into sole possession of 8th place on the all-time list. San Jose defeated Utah earlier this season, 69-48, in HP Pavilion on Apr. 28, and is undefeated (5-0) against division opponents this season. Dating back to last season the SaberCats have won nine straight games against division opponents. San Jose beat Utah, 65-50, on Apr. 4, 2006 in the only meeting in the Beehive State.

LAST SERIES MEETING
SaberCats Defeat Blaze, 69-48, Move Into 1st Place
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Apr. 28, 2007) - The San Jose SaberCats forced five Utah turnovers and registered four sacks on the evening holding the Blaze to a season-low point total in a 69-48 win Saturday at HP Pavilion. The win kept San Jose (5-3) undefeated at home this season and was its 10th straight regular season victory at HP Pavilion. San Jose's Trestin George took the opening kickoff 56 yards for a touchdown staking the SaberCats to a quick 7-0 lead. George Williams recovered a fumble after a Phil Glover sack and Mark Grieb hit Ben Nelson on the very next play for a 14-0 San Jose lead just 4:03 into the game. Following a pair of Brian Johnson 2-yard scoring runs that gave San Jose a 28-7 lead early in the second quarter, Utah's Joe Germaine hit Tom Pace on a 10-yard score with 13 seconds left in the half to cap a 20-0 run pulling the Blaze within 28-27. Germaine completed 28-of-42 passes for 356 yards and seven touchdowns, but his streak of consecutive attempts without an interception came to an end at 194 when Marquis Floyd snared a pass in the endzone during the first quarter. The SaberCats caught a break when a pair of Utah illegal defense penalties gave them two un-timed downs at the end of the half. They cashed in on the second opportunity when Jason Geathers scampered 33 yards with a Grieb toss for a score to stake San Jose to a 35-27 halftime lead. Grieb, who surpassed the 30,000 plateau in career passing yards, completed 25-of-34 for 250 yards and six touchdowns without an interception. Geathers, who earned game Ironman honors for a second straight week, caught seven passes for 74 yards and a touchdown while adding two solo tackles. Ron Jones had 2.0 sacks and tied team records with 2 FFs and 3.0 tackles for loss and the defensive unit forced five Blaze fumbles recovering four. Phil Glover added a sack, career-high 7.0 total tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to earn Defensive Player of the Game honors. San Jose remained unbeaten at home this season and improved to 54-8 when scoring 60 or more points in a game.

THE COACHES
San Jose - Darren Arbet, 9th season
93-40 (.699) reg. season; 103-45 (.696) overall
2-1 (.667) career vs. Utah
12-7 (.632) career vs. Danny White
Two-time Arena Football League Coach of the Year and ArenaBowl champion Darren Arbet enters his ninth season as head coach of the San Jose SaberCats and his second as the club's general manager. Last season Arbet guided the SaberCats to their seventh straight winning season and playoff appearance by going 10-6, the sixth time in his eight seasons the team has posted a double-digit regular season win total. The team also captured its fifth Western Division title under Arbet (sixth overall) and advanced to the semifinal round of the playoffs for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. Arbet has compiled the third-best postseason winning percentage (.667) and is one of just six head coaches in league history to amass 10 playoff victories. Under the direction of Arbet San Jose has enjoyed unmatched success vaulting the franchise to elite status in the AFL. Since the start of the 2000 season, Arbet's second as head coach, the SaberCats have claimed two ArenaBowl championships (2002, 2004), compiled the most regular season wins (80), the second-most playoff wins (10) and have averaged nearly 12 victories a season. In addition, the club has set league records for regular season wins in a season (13 in 2002), overall wins in a season (16 in 2002), consecutive regular season wins in a season (12 in 2002), regular season wins to end a season (11 in 2000) and the longest regular season win streak (15 in 2000-01). Arbet's ties to the AFL date back to the late 1980s when he played two seasons as a fullback/linebacker with the Los Angeles Cobras (1988) and Maryland Commandos (1989) before a wrist injury that required three surgeries ended his career. During his playing days, Arbet lined up against former Philadelphia head coach Michael Trigg, who was a quarterback with the Detroit Drive, and Georgia Force offensive coordinator Steve Thonn, who played WR/DB with the Chicago Bruisers.
Utah - Danny White, 15th season
135-71 (.655) reg. season; 155-82 (.654) overall
14-13 (.519) career vs. San Jose
7-12 (.368) career vs. Darren Arbet
Now in his 15th season as an AFL head coach, and second with the Blaze, Danny White has compiled a record of 154-82 and has advanded to the AFL Playoffs in 12 of the previous 13 seasons (hasn't missed the postseason since 1992). Prior to joining the Blaze, White was the head coach of the Arizona Rattlers for 13 seasons (1992-2004). The AFL Hall of Fame coach has two titles (1994 and 1997) to his credit and he has made five ArenaBowl appearances (1994, 97, 2002-04). During his last season in Arizona in 2004, White compiled a 13-6 record and made his third straight ArenaBowl appearance. White won AFL "Coach of the Year" in 1993 and officially became the head coach of the Blaze on April 21, 2005. White guided the Blaze to a 7-9 regular season record during the team's inaugural season. The Blaze also made the postseason, falling to the rival Arizona Rattlers in 2006.

SABERCATS CLINCH DIVISION; BEAT ORLANDO 59-52
San Jose Wins 7th Straight Game
SAN JOSE, Calif. (June 1, 2007) - Mark Grieb tossed six touchdown passes leading the San Jose SaberCats to a 59-52 win over the Orlando Predators clinching the Arena Football League's Western Division title and a first round playoff bye. The SaberCats (10-3) won their seventh straight game and defeated the Predators (7-6) for the fourth consecutive time. Grieb's 24-yard scoring pass to James Roe with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter broke the eighth tie of the game and the SaberCats forced four Shane Stafford incompletions on the Predators ensuing possession to preserve the win. Grieb completed all 13 of his second half pass attempts and finished 22-of-30 for 278 yards, including a 5-of-5, 83 yard, 2 touchdown final quarter. Roe, who eclipsed the 8,000 mark in career receiving yards, led the SaberCats with eight catches for 130 yards and three scores, all in the second half. Stafford threw for a season-high 327 yards and six touchdowns on 21-of-37 passing, but was just 4-of-12 in the decisive fourth quarter. Ron Johnson had a game-high nine catches for 121 yards while Javarus Dudley totaled four scores and 146 yards on seven receptions. Orlando's Greg White sacked Grieb late in the third quarter for his AFL single-season record 14th of the year, bettering Silas Demary's 2005 record of 13.5. San Jose's Omarr Smith added a big defensive play also, returning a Kevin Nagle fumble 48 yards for a touchdown midway through the second quarter staking the SaberCats to a 21-14 lead.
TRENDS
ON THE ROAD AGAIN - Riding a 7-game winning streak, which includes a pair of wins on the road, the SaberCats are off to Salt Lake City to battle Utah Blaze in a Western Division showdown on Saturday. San Jose evened its 2007 road record at 3-3 with a victory at Nashville on May 25 and needs to win one of its two remaining road games to secure its 10th non-losing road record in 13 seasons. Two of San Jose's three road defeats have come by a combined 5 points in consecutive games to a pair of the best teams in the AFL. The SaberCats lost 48-45 at Chicago on Mar. 9 and followed that with a 2-point loss, 64-62, at Georgia on Mar. 24. The SaberCats currently own a 52-41 (.559) all-time regular season road record.
STREAKING - San Jose's 7-game winning streak is currently the longest in the AFL and is tied for the 2nd longest in the league this season. Dallas also rattled off 7 straight wins to start the season while Chicago holds the top mark this season with an 8-game streak following a season-opening loss. The SaberCats equaled their 2006 squad for the 3rd longest single season winning streak in team history. The franchise record for consecutive wins in a season is 12, also an AFL record, accomplished in 2002. The team also has an 11-game streak (2001).
HOW THE WEST IS WON - The SaberCats begin a season-ending 3-game stretch of games against Western Division opponents on Saturday at Utah. San Jose has not lost to a division foe yet this season going 5-0, and including their playoff win over Arizona last season the SaberCats have won nine straight games overall and five straight on the road against Western Division competition. San Jose has an all-time regular season record of 46-26 (.639) against Western Division teams, but is just 19-15 (.559) on the road. The SaberCats have never gone an entire season without losing a game to a division opponent.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE - Due in large part to six wins of 20 or more points and outscoring their opponents 435 to 310 over their current 7-game winning streak, the SaberCats lead the AFL in per game average scoring differential at +12.5. The SaberCats average 61.3 points a game while allowing just 48.8. Dallas, with the best record in the league at 12-1, is +10.0 while the Georgia Force (11-2) is at +9.0. Las Vegas sits alone at the opposite end with a -17.3 average differential.

JUST WIN - The SaberCats raised their season record to 10-3 with their 59-52 win over Orlando on Jun. 1 and recorded their 7th season with 10 or more wins during the regular year. San Jose equaled Tampa Bay for the second-most seasons with double-digit wins, one behind both Arizona and Orlando. All seven of San Jose's 10+ plus win seasons have come since the 2000 season and the SaberCats have the league's best regular season record over that span at 87-32.
REGULAR SEASON RECORDS SINCE 2000

San Jose SaberCats 87-32 .731
Orlando Predators 75-44 .630
Arizona Rattlers 71-49 .592
Tampa Bay Storm 68-51 .571
Chicago Rush 60-45 .571
Los Angeles Avengers 58-61 .487
Dallas Desperados 56-34-1 .617
PICKIN IT - After intercepting just 4 passes in the first six games of the year, the SaberCats have totaled 13 INTs over the last seven games and have pilfered at least one pass in each game during their current winning streak outpicking the opposition 13 to 4 over the last 7 games. Clevan Thomas kept the streak alive against Orlando with his 6th INT of the year to tie Marquis Floyd for the team lead. Omarr Smith (4) and Trestin George (1) have supplied the remaining INTs. With 17 picks on the year the SaberCats are tied with the 5th most in the AFL.
TAKETH AWAY - The SaberCats forced a pair of Orlando turnovers during their 59-52 division clinching win on Jun. 1 increasing their season takeaway total to 33, the 2nd most in the AFL this season. San Jose has 17 INTs and has recovered 16 fumbles on the year and sits just 2 takeaways behind Chicago, who leads the AFL with 35. Over their current 7-game win streak the SaberCats have forced 25 turnovers and are +16 in turnover margin. The SaberCats rank 3rd overall in the AFL this season with a +13 turnover margin. Only four times in their 13-year history have the SaberCats had more takeaways in a season. The 1998 squad set the franchise record with 41 takeaways.
SATURDAY NIGHT'S ALRIGHT - The SaberCats have gotten used to playing on Saturday nights. They'll take a 6-game Saturday winning streak into EnergySolutions Arena for the Jun. 9 showdown with the Blaze. San Jose lost its first Saturday contest of the season falling at Georgia on Mar. 24, but has failed to lose since then. All time the club is 63-25 (.716) when playing on a Saturday.
ON THE MARK - Mark Grieb improved his regular season record as San Jose's starting QB to 81-29 (.736) and remained perfect at 14-0 during the month of June with San Jose's win over Orlando on Jun. 1. Grieb has started 53 times on the road for San Jose and owns a 31-22 (.585) record.
JUNE BUGGIN - San Jose's 59-52 win over Orlando on Jun. 1 was the team's 9th straight regular season victory during the 6th month of the year and 14th win in its last 15 June games. Prior to last Saturday the SaberCats hadn't played a regular season game in the month of June since the 2002 season, but the win gave them a 25-11 (.694) regular season record during the month.
DOIN THE D - Although they saw their streak of sub-50 point allowed games come to an end at six, San Jose's defense came up big in its 59-52 win over Orlando on Jun. 1. Clevan Thomas intercepted a Shane Stafford offering in his own endzone to thwart a Predators first quarter drive and Omarr Smith returned a fumble 47-yards for a TD early in the second quarter giving San Jose a 7-point lead. The return is tied for the 7th longest in AFL history. The biggest defensive stand came late in the fourth quarter, however, with San Jose holding a 7-point lead. The SaberCats forced four consecutive Stafford incompletions and gained possession on downs to run out the clock. San Jose ranks 4th in the AFL allowing just 48.8 points per game.
NOTES
TITLE TOWN - The SaberCats clinched their 2nd straight Western Division title and 7th overall with their 59-52 win over Orlando on Jun. 1 and own the most division crowns of any team since the AFL went to a 4-division format 13 seasons ago in 1995. Arizona, Tampa Bay and the defunct Albany Firebirds each own five titles while Orlando and Iowa have four each. The 2007 Eastern Division champion Dallas Desperados captured their 2nd straight and 3rd overall and the 2007 Southern Division champion Georgia Force won a second title. We are still waiting to see who wins the Central Division with Chicago, Colorado and Kansas City all in the hunt. The AFL's tie-break format was used to determine division winners in case of a first-place tie.
ROE-LIFIC - With Ben Nelson sitting on the sidelines nursing a leg injury, WR James Roe has claimed the spot as the top SaberCats receiver. He put together another impressive performance on Jun. 1 against Orlando, hauling in 8 balls for 130 yards and 3 TDs, all in the second half of the game, including two late 4th quarter TD grabs to help the SaberCats earn a 59-52 win. Roe became the 16th player in AFL history to reach 8,000 career receiving yards (8,092) and is the only San Jose receiver to ever break the 5K, 6K, 7K and now 8,000 receiving-yard barrier. In three games without Nelson in the lineup, Roe has amassed 394 yards and 6 TDs on 27 catches and leads the team in receptions (106), TD catches (32) and receiving yards (1,276). His reception total ranks 6th in the league, his TD total is good for 7th best and his yardage total ranks 8th.

GETTING HIS KICKS - A.J. Haglund was in the midst of a slump before Friday's game against the Orlando Predators. Haglund had missed 5 consecutive field goals after hitting true on 6 of his first 7 attempts through the first 5 games of the season. Haglund broke the streak when he connected on a 39-yard FG as time expired in the first half, tying the score at 24-24. It was his longest FG of the year and gave him 8 on the season, the most by a San Jose kicker since Daron Alcorn made 10 FGs in 2002. Haglund also nailed all 8 of his PATs, extending his streak of consecutive makes to 13, and giving him 101 on the year, the first kicker in the league to hit the century mark. Haglund needs 9 PATs to set a team single-season record and is just 17 shy of the AFL single-season record of 117 set by Carlos Martinez of the Dallas Desperados last season.
BY GEORGE! - SaberCats' DL George Williams, dubbed as "The Big Sexy", recorded his 10th career reception when he grabbed a 1-yard scoring pass against Orlando on Jun. 1. QB Mark Grieb scrambled to his right early in the 3rd quarter and found Williams wide open in the back of the endzone for the scoring pass. It was the 3rd catch of the season for Williams and all three have gone for TDs. His other two TD receptions came at Chicago on Mar. 9. Williams tied the team record for TD catches by a lineman, equaling the mark established by Al Noga in 1996. The TD grab was also the 4th career for Williams setting a career record for the most ever by a SaberCats lineman. In San Jose's 13-year history, nine linemen have caught a total of 17 TD passes with Julius Gant (1) and Garrett McIntyre (1) combining with Williams for five in 2007.
MOVIN' ON UP - DB Clevan Thomas moved into sole possession of 8th place on the career AFL interceptions list when he snared the 38th pick of his career on Jun. 1 against Orlando. Thomas is just 4 picks out of the 5th spot on the chart and only 12 INTs separate him from the 2nd place spot - Kansas City's Kenny McEntyre holds the record with 71 in his career. Thomas has one career pick against the Blaze, snatching a Joe Germaine offering on Mar. 4 in Utah last season. Thomas is tied with Marquis Floyd for the team lead with 6 INTs on the season.

GETTING GRIEBY - QB Mark Grieb rebounded nicely from an average first half in the SaberCats' 59-52 victory over Orlando on Jun. 1. After completing just 9-of-17 first half attempts for 105 yards with an INT, Grieb didn't miss a beat in the 3rd and 4th frames of the contest. Grieb completed all 13 of his 2nd half pass attempts for 173 yards and 4 TDs. James Roe was the primary beneficiary of Grieb's flawless 2nd half performance catching 8 passes for 130 yards and 3 TDs. With 83 TD passes on the year, Grieb needs just 2 more to reach the 600 plateau for his career and to break his own 2005 team season record of 84. By throwing for 2 yards, the 10-year vet can also become just the 2nd QB in AFL history to have four consecutive 4,000-yard seasons. Dallas' Clint Dolezel became the 1st when he reached the 4,000-yard mark last season. Grieb and former teammate John Dutton are both on pace to reach the 4,000-yard plateau for the 4th straight year. Grieb currently ranks among the top 5 in nearly every passing category.

CASE OF THE RUNS - FB Matt Kinsinger returned to the lineup on Jun. 1 against Orlando after missing the previous 8 games rushing for a yard on 3 carries to once again move past Tom Petithomme (400) into 2nd place on the team's career rushing yards list with 401. Kinsinger also moved up a notch into 3rd place on the team's career rush attempts list as his 3 carries elevated his San Jose total to 137, just ahead of Barry Wagner's total of 136. He needs 18 rushes to become the all-time attempts leader and 42 yards to take the 1st place spot in the rushing yards category - Derrick Chachere currently holds both of the top spots. A prolific short-snapper as well, Kinsinger handled those duties flawlessly against the Predators helping A.J. Haglund to a perfect kicking game (8-8 PATs; 1-1 FGs).

FUMBLIN' AROUND - San Jose DB Omarr Smith scored his second defensive TD of the season after recovering and returning a fumble against Orlando on Jun. 1. The 47-yard razzle-dazzle fumble return was Smith's 1st FR for a score and equaled the 7th longest loose ball returned for a TD in the history of the AFL. Orlando's Marlon Moye-Moore established the record earlier this season - collecting a fumble and running it back 52 yards for the TD. A.J. Haglund is the only other SaberCat to return a fumble for a TD this season when he scooped up a kick return loose ball and ran it 4 yards into the endzone on Mar. 31 against Tampa Bay. Smith also played in his 78th career game as a SaberCat, passing Howard Butler on the franchise games played list for 6th place.
MILESTONES - SaberCats' wideouts Jason Geathers and Rodney Wright both reached personal career milestones in the team's 59-52 win against Orlando on Jun. 1. Geathers surpassed the 500-yard mark in career receiving yards and the 50-catch plateau after a 6 catch, 48-yard performance against the Predators. He also caught a TD pass, bringing his career offensive totals to 528 receiving yards on 53 catches with 9 TDs. Wright, who had 7 grabs and 99 yards on the evening, eclipsed the 1,500-yard mark for receiving yards and now has a 3-year total of 1,540 yards, 138 receptions and 16 TDs. The tandem of Geathers and Wright has provided an enormous boost to the SaberCats receiving unit this season, especially with the injury to Ben Nelson.
STEVIE WONDER - Rookie LB Steve Watson has been all over the field - literally - for the SaberCats this season. The former All-af2 performer totaled 7.5 tackles, 2.0 TFLs and his 2nd sack of the season against Orlando on Jun. 1 and has amassed 19.5 tackles, 3.0 TFLs and 2.0 sacks in the last 2 ball games. Splitting time at both LB spots and playing on special teams, Watson has accumulated 50.5 tackles on the year, good for 3rd on the team and the highest season total from a non-DB in club history. Watson's 3 assisted tackles against the Predators gave him 25 on the year, tying Shalon Baker's 1998 team record, despite missing 4 games with a broken wrist earlier in the season. Watson and Glover have combined from their LB positions to post 50 solo tackles, 28 assisted stops, 5.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, 3 forced and recovered fumbles.

UTAH PLAYERS TO WATCH
QB JOE GERMAINE - On the verge of breaking numerous passing records, Germaine has been the most prolific quarterback in the Arena Football League in 2007. He has tossed a league-leading 97 TDs and ranks 1st in passing average (321.1 ypg), passing yards (4,496), and pass completions (379). His QB rating of 126.2 is second only to Georgia's Chris Greisen. He needs 345 yards to break the single-season record (4,841) for passing yards, which was set by San Jose's Mark Grieb in 2006. Germaine can also become the 3rd player in AFL history to record 100 or more passing TDs in a season and he is on pace to break the single-season record of 106, set by Clint Dolezel in 2006. In 4 career games against the SaberCats, the former Ohio State Buckeye has completed 90-of-147 pass attempts for 1,132 yards and 20 TDs; he has also rushed for one score. The SaberCats' defense has intercepted Germaine 4 times and has totaled 8 sacks against him as well. The two teams met earlier this season on Apr. 28, and Germaine completed 28 of his 42 passes for 356 yards and 7 TDs in a San Jose 69-48 victory.
WR SIAHA BURLEY - With the success of a good QB comes the emergence of a great wide receiver. Burley owns the AFL's top marks in TDs (44), receiving yards (1,893), receptions (145), and receiving yards per game (145.6). The Central Florida product needs 10 catches to break the single-season reception total of 154 and needs 90 yards to break the receiving yards record. With 107 more yards, he can become the first receiver in league history to eclipse the 2,000-yard plateau. In his 7th year in the AFL, Burley has played for four different teams (Orlando, Los Angeles, Arizona, Utah) and has played in 11 career games versus San Jose. His totals for those games are 72 receptions, 978 yards and 25 TDs. In Burley's last outing against the SaberCats on Apr. 28, he torched the defense with 190 yards and 4 TDs on 13 catches.
WR TOM PACE - The former Arizona State Sun Devil is the third leg in the Blaze's offense behind Germaine and Burley. Pace is second on the team in receptions (97), receiving yards (1,027) and TDs (18). He is part of a passing offense that ranks first in the league, averaging nearly 330 yards per game through the air. Pace has also returned 28 kickoffs for 605 yards, leading to a 21.6 kick return average - 5th best in the AFL. In his last game against San Jose on Apr. 28, Pace notched 13 catches for 146 yards and 3 TDs. Between Utah and the Arizona Rattlers; Pace is in his 5th AFL season and has played in 10 career games versus the SaberCats. He has collected 6 TD receptions and 403 yards on 36 receptions.
