June 5, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Utah Blaze News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Blaze (7-7) continue their playoff push when they take on Western Division foe San Jose (10-3) at EnergySolutions Arena on Saturday, June 9th at 7 p.m.
The game will be shown locally on KJZZ 14 with DAVE FOX and ALEMA HARRINGTON serving as talent, while the game can also be heard on 1280 The Zone with KEVIN GRAHAM and TOM GOODHINES calling the action.
"We are coming off two solid wins, so it's important for us to keep the momentum going," said head coach/general manager DANNY WHITE. "These next two games could be the difference between hosting the playoffs and not making the playoffs."
This regular season match up marks the fourth meeting between the two teams and the second of the 2007 season. San Jose currently leads the series at 2-1. White is 7-12 head-to-head against San Jose head coach, DARREN ARBET.
With two games remaining in the 2007 season, WR SIAHA BURLEY (5-10, 176, Central Florida) has his sights set on the AFL's version of the triple crown: leader in receptions (145, currently No. 1), receiving yards (1,893, currently No. 1) and receiving touchdowns (44, currently No. 1). The former Central Florida standout is on pace to have 167 receptions for 2,184 yards and 51 touchdowns. This would shatter AFL's marks for single-season receptions (154, MARCUS NASH in 2004) and yards (1,982, CALVIN SCHEXNAYDER in 1998).
Blaze QB JOE GERMAINE (6-2, 229, Ohio State) currently has completed 376-of-546 (69.4%) passes for 4,496 yards (No. 1 in AFL), 97 touchdowns (No. 1 in AFL) and only nine interceptions for the 2007 season. The Offensive Player of the Year and All-Arena candidate currently is on pace to throw 111 touchdowns and 5,138 passing yards - both would shatter AFL records.
Germaine has his eye on numerous AFL single-season marks including: passing yards (4,841, MARK GRIEB in 2006), touchdown passes (105, CLINT DOLEZEL in 2006), and completion percentage (70.3%, Grieb in 2004). The former Buckeye and Rose Bowl MVP has 103 total touchdowns (passing and rushing) in the 2007 season.
In only seven games, Blaze defensive standout, DB DAHNEL SINGFIELD (6-1, 190, Buffalo), has recorded one interception, five pass breakups and 40.0 tackles, including one for a loss. Singfield was named the AFL's ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Colorado Crush where he recorded one forced fumble, one interception, three pass breakups and 8.0 tackles, including one for a loss.
The SaberCats are led by WR JAMES ROE (6-1, 197, Norfolk State) who has recorded 106 receptions for 1,276 yards and 32 touchdowns. On defense, DB OMARR SMITH (5-9, 186, San Jose State) has recorded 74.5 tackles, 11 pass breakups, four interceptions and one forced fumble. San Jose QB MARK GRIEB (6-2, 215, UC Davis) is 342-of-481 (66.0%) passing for 3,998 yards, 83 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
