The OSC Interview: Dallas Desperados coach Will McClay
by Fran Stuchbury
June 5, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Dallas Desperados
OurSports Central contributor Fran Stuchbury spoke to Dallas Desperados coach Will McClay following the team's 59-56 victory over the Philadelphia Soul last week. McClay has led the Desperados to a 12-1 record this season after winning back-to-back East Division titles.
Fran Stuchbury: Were you happy with the team's overall performance tonight?
Will McClay: Yes, we got a win and we performed well under adverse conditions coming to Philadelphia, a tough place to play against a good football team. We came in and executed at the crucial times we needed to.
FS: How about the flip passes that QB Clint Dolezel likes to do, is that an important wrinkle to your offense?
WM: It's part of his offense, it's part of our offense, It's what we do. You take what the defense gives you. It's an opportunity to get the ball out of your hands quick, have a playmaker catch it and make something happen. It's also a way to slow down the pass rush.
FS: So what's the status of injured WR Marcus Nash? Do you think he will be ready for the postseason?
WM: He should be ready for the postseason. He had surgery the other day, and I'm hoping he is going be back. We have a bye in the opening round of the AFL playoffs so he should be back at that time.
FS: What was the process in brining back WR Dialleo Burks?
WM: We knew he was coming back. We put him on the refuse to report list so we kept that door open. He was taking care of some issues but whenever you can add a veteran player like that, with his abilities we are going do it.
FS: Has free substitution made your job easier as a coach?
WM: It's made it a little tough because I'm a lifer. I learned Arena Football the old school way. I adjusted to the change. It helps us keep our offensive and defensive players fresh.
FS: If the AFL gives out the Ironman of the Year award do you feel that WR/DB Will Pettis is deserving of the award?
WM: There's no question, he is the best football player in my opinion in the Arena Football League. To do all the different things he can do and have an impact on offense, defense and special teams. There's not many like him.
