Giants Begin Three-Game Series Against Lancaster Tonight... The San Jose Giants begin a six-game homestand this evening with the first of three straight contests against the Lancaster JetHawks at Municipal Stadium. San Jose completed a six-game road trip last night with a 5-1 record. The Giants began the trip by sweeping a three-game series from Inland Empire last weekend before taking two out of three at Stockton. In last night's series rubber game against the Ports, Alex Burg knocked in four runs on a pair of doubles while Ricky Oropesa hit a three-run homer to lead San Jose to a 7-3 victory. Starting pitcher Taylor Rogers earned the win after limiting Stockton to one run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. Rogers walked three and struck out eight.
Media Coverage... The games on Friday and Saturday will be televised live on Comcast Hometown Network, Channel 104. Joe Ritzo will handle the play-by-play for both games with Rocky Koplik providing color commentary on Friday and Greg Young on Saturday. The entire series can also be heard live on sjgiants.com and inside Municipal Stadium at 92.9 FM.
Offensive Fireworks... During their six-game road trip, the Giants scored a whopping 62 runs (10.3 per game) and hit 12 homers. San Jose scored 10+ runs in each of the first five games of the trip. The Giants hadn't scored in double figures in more than two straight games this season before the recent streak. San Jose has also scored at least seven runs in 10 consecutive games dating back to July 29 (8-2 record). Over the last 10 contests, the Giants are batting .316 as a team and averaging 9.3 runs per game.
Duvall Ties Single-Season Home Run Record... Third baseman Adam Duvall hit his 26th homer of the year on Wednesday to tie the San Jose Giants single-season home run record (Tim Flaherty, 26 home runs in 2001). Duvall saw his consecutive game streak with a home run end at five last night. He hit six home runs during the streak. Duvall has also clubbed 10 home runs in his last 14 games. During his current 14-game hitting streak, Duvall owns a .354 batting average (23-for-64) with 29 RBI's. He's also collected 18 RBI's over his last six games.
Playoff Race... The Giants (61-55) enter tonight's action with a two- game lead over the Modesto Nuts (59-57) for the wild card playoff spot in the North Division. San Jose's 23-23 second half record is three games behind the first-place Visalia Rawhide (26-20) in the North Division. Including tonight, the Giants have 24 games remaining in the regular season. A win this evening would move San Jose over .500 in the second half for the first time since June 23 (2-1 record).
Panik's Hitting Streak At 15 Games... Shortstop Joe Panik brings a 15- game hitting streak into tonight's contest. During the streak, Panik is batting at a .455 clip (30-for-66) with 15 RBI's. The former first round draft pick leads the Giants in hits (133) and doubles (25) while he's third in RBI's (69) to go with a .293 batting average. Over his last 23 games, Panik is batting .436 (41-for-94) with 20 RBI's. The 15-game hit streak is the longest this season by a Giants player. During the last series against Stockton, Panik collected 10 hits in 13 at-bats (.769) with eight runs scored, two homers and five RBI's. His streak of eight straight at-bats with a hit dating back to Tuesday's series opener ended in the second inning last night.
League Leaderboard... Adam Duvall is currently tops in the California League in home runs (26), third in RBI's (84) and fourth in runs scored (83). Joe Panik ranks third in hits (133) while pitcher Jack Snodgrass is tied for second in wins (10).
Odds And Ends... The Giants are a league-best 19-12 (.613) in one-run games this season ... San Jose has suffered only two defeats all year when holding a lead after the seventh inning (50-2) - the fewest losses in the California League ... The Giants are 42-15 (.737) when scoring first in a game, but just 19-40 (.322) when their opponent scores first ... San Jose is tops in the league with nine shutouts, however the Giants have also been shutout seven times (second-most in the league).
Record-Setting First Half Championship Streak Ends... San Jose concluded the first half with a 38-32 record and in second place in the North Division. It marked the first time since 2004 that the Giants didn't win the first half North Division crown. San Jose finished three games behind the Bakersfield Blaze (41-29) for the top spot. The Giants had won a California League record seven straight first half North Division titles (2005-2011). The previous league record for consecutive first half championships was three (Visalia Oaks, 1981-83). After sweeping Bakersfield in a series that ended on May 26, San Jose owned a 5 1/2 game lead in the standings over the Blaze with 21 games remaining. However, the Giants went just 6-15 to finish the half, including a 10-game losing streak from May 27-June 5. San Jose now needs to win either the second half North Division title or secure the wild card to extend their streak of consecutive playoff appearances to nine seasons (2004-2011).
Opponent Notes: Lancaster JetHawks... The Lancaster JetHawks, an affiliate of the Houston Astros, are currently 22-24 in the second half - nine games behind the High Desert Mavericks (31-15) for the top spot in the South Division. However, Lancaster's overall record of 59-57 is three games ahead of Rancho Cucamonga (56-60) for the South Division's final playoff spot. The JetHawks are second in the league in batting average (.281), tied for second in home runs (128) and last in ERA (5.28). Telvin Nash ranks second in the league in home runs (23) while Erik Castro is second in RBI's (88).
