Late Comeback Nixed After Walk-Off

August 10, 2012 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

ADELANTO, CA - The JetHawks battled back to tie the game in the top of the ninth only to fall in the bottom of the ninth when Jack Marder hit a two-run walk-off homer to give the High Desert Mavericks a 7-5 win on Thursday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Down 5-2 in the top of the eighth, Lancaster got closer thanks to back-to-back solo home runs courtesy of Erik Castro and Domingo Santana. The homers came off of Andrew Kittredge who had not allowed a home run in 14 innings this season.

In the top of the ninth Tyler Burgoon (6-2) came on to get the save but couldn't hold on to the one run lead. Chris Epps hit a one-out triple to center field. With the potential tying run at third and one out, Rafael Valenzuela came on to pinch hit for Roberto Peña and knocked a fly ball to centerfield to score Epps from third.

Carlos Quevedo (2-4) came on in relief in the bottom of the ninth in an attempt to send the game to extra innings. Quevedo walked Gabriel Noriega with one out and allowed the game-winning home run to Marder with two down. Marder hit the ball over the right field fence to win the rubber game of the series for High Desert.

Lancaster played the game without All-Star outfielder George Springer. Springer was promoted to Double A Corpus Christi before the game. Jiovanni Mier, who had been on the disabled list since early May with a hamstring injury, was activated and took Springer's spot on the roster. Mier was in the starting lineup and played three innings in the field while going 0-for-2 at the plate with two fly balls to the warning track.

High Desert jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning against starter Tyson Perez. The right-hander allowed five runs - four earned - over seven innings with four strikeouts and two walks.

Mavericks starter Trevor Miller was sharp in his first Cal League start of the season. He allowed two runs on five hits in five innings with seven strikeouts and a walk.

Down 3-0, the JetHawks scored two runs in the top of the fifth to get within a run. Peña singled to left field to score Muren and Epps. The catcher had just one RBI coming into the game.

The JetHawks (22-24, 59-57) head up to San Jose to take on the Giants in the first of a three game series on Friday night at Municipal Stadium. Nick Tropeano will get the start for Lancaster. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
