San Jose Giants News Release
STOCKTON - Alex Burg knocked in four runs on a pair of doubles and Ricky Oropesa hit a three-run homer to lead the San Jose Giants to a 7-3 victory over the Stockton Ports on Thursday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. San Jose takes two out of three games in the series and finishes their road trip with a 5-1 record.
Burg (2-for-5, 2 2B, 4 RBI) and Oropesa (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) combined to drive home all seven of the Giants runs to lead the offensive attack. Joe Panik (2-for-4) and Adam Duvall (2-for-4) also extended their hitting streaks to 15 and 14 games respectively while Carter Jurica (2-for-5) added a pair of singles.
Taylor Rogers (9-10) picked-up the win after limiting Stockton to one run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. Rogers walked three and struck out eight during his stint on the mound.
San Jose never trailed in the contest scoring twice in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. Three consecutive singles from Jurica, Panik and Duvall to start the game loaded the bases with none out. After Oropesa struck out, Burg stepped to the plate and clubbed a double off the fence in deep left center field to bring home Jurica and Panik.
Rogers maintained the 2-0 advantage as the right-hander took a shutout into the sixth inning. Rogers pitched around a one-out walk in the bottom of the first and a one-out single in the second inning to keep the Ports off the scoreboard. He then fired 1-2-3 third and fourth innings and had set down 10 straight hitters until Michael Gilmartin singled with two outs in the fifth. Ryan Pineda followed by drawing a walk, however Rogers worked out of trouble inducing the next hitter, Chad Oberacker, to bounce into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Stockton finally broke through with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning to knock Rogers out of the game. With one out, B.A. Vollmuth singled and then Tony Thompson drew a two-out walk. Mitch LeVier followed with a single to plate Vollmuth and cut the Giants lead to 2-1. Edward Concepcion (1/3 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) was then summoned from the bullpen and he promptly struck out Dusty Robinson to keep San Jose in front.
Both teams scored two runs in the seventh inning as the Giants remained in the lead. Jurica started the top of the frame with a single before Panik was hit by a pitch. Duvall and Oropesa then both flied out, but Burg followed with a two-RBI double into the right center field gap to make it 4-1.
The Ports though responded in the bottom of the inning as Gilmartin led off with a single before Concepcion walked Ryan Pineda. New pitcher Phil McCormick (1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) then retired Oberacker on a fly out to left, but Myrio Richard reached on an infield single to load the bases. Shawn Sanford (2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) became the third pitcher of the inning and he set down Vollmuth on a pop out, but Ryan Ortiz then delivered a single up the middle to score both Gilmartin and Pineda to trim the San Jose lead to 4-3. Sanford did recover to strikeout the next batter, Thompson, to end the inning.
Cody Hall (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) relieved Sanford to start the bottom of the eighth and struck out two in a perfect inning. In the top of the ninth, the Giants scored three insurance runs as Panik singled with one out, Duvall was hit by a pitch and then Oropesa lined a three-run homer to deep right for a 7-3 advantage. The home run was Oropesa's 13th of the season.
Jose Valdez (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) tossed a scoreless bottom of the ninth to seal the victory. A hit by pitch and a single put runners on the corners with one out, but Valdez retired Vollmuth on a pop out and then struck out Ortiz to finish the game and leave the potential tying run in the on-deck circle.
Stockton starter Josh Bowman (4-10) suffered the loss after yielding two runs (both earned) on five hits over five innings. Bowman, who allowed just one hit after the first inning, walked four and struck out eight.
