Blowout Loss Closes Homestand, 14-2

August 10, 2012 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The Visalia Rawhide launched an 18-hit attack against the Bakersfield Blaze, and on a warm evening, buried the Blaze at Sam Lynn Ballpark, 14-2.

The key moment in the game came in the second inning, when Blaze starting pitcher Tanner Robles (L, 3-3), who had been throwing the ball exceptionally well, appeared to feel a strain in his side. At the time, the Rawhide already led, 4-1, though 2 of those runs were unearned. From there, the Blaze went into preservation mode.

Pat Doyle was summoned to chew innings, and chew he did. Doyle, despite giving up 5 runs in relief that allowed the Rawhide to, for all intents and purposes, run away with the game, managed to eat 5.1 innings - the single longest relief outing for any Blaze pitcher all season. More than anything, the young righthander spared the other relievers.

Unfortunately, the final score was far from decided. Chris Joyce entered in the 8th inning with the Blaze trailing 9-2, and the Rawhide promptly went to work, sending 10 men to the plate, while scoring 5 runs in 6 hits to go up by a full dozen, 14-2. The Blaze got a couple in the bottom half to reach our final margin.

The win went to Visalia starter Willy Paredes (W, 3-1), who, spotted 9 runs, cruised through 7 innings of solid work.

In all, Visalia collected 18 hits in the game, the most the Blaze pitching staff has allowed in any contest all season. The 14 runs allowed tied a season high, and the Rawhide's 4 homers (2 for Garrett Weber, 1 each by Jon Griffin and Tyson Van Winkle) tied the most the Blaze have allowed in a game, as well. The Rawhide hit a total of 9 homers in the series while scoring 28 runs on a hurting Blaze pitching corp.

On the offensive side, Ryan Wright collected a 2-RBI single, and Juan Duran hit his 11th homer in the losing effort.

The Blaze now embark on another 6-game road trip through High Desert and San Jose, and will be back home next Friday.

The Friday and Saturday games in Adelanto can both be heard on internet and radio, as they make up the dual Blaze Games of the Week on SmartTalk AM-1230. Make sure to tune in at 6:55pm for the pregame show, as Dan Besbris brings the call. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
