THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... begin a seven-game road trip Thursday evening with the first of four straight contests against the High Desert Mavericks. San Jose won two-of-three games from the visiting Lake Elsinore Storm in their most recent series. After the clubs split a pair of 6-3 decisions to open the set, the Giants scored an 8-1 victory in the rubber match yesterday afternoon. Brandon Crawford and Roger Kieschnick both smacked home runs to lead the offensive attack while Madison Bumgarner (5 IP, 1 R) earned his third consecutive win to begin the year. San Jose currently owns a 10-4 overall record and are in second place in the North Division - two games behind the Visalia Rawhide (12-2) for the top spot.
Road Warriors... The Giants begin a stretch Thursday in which they'll play 20 out of their next 24 games on the road. After the current four-game series against High Desert, San Jose travels to Lancaster for their only regular season visit to Clear Channel Stadium. San Jose returns home on May 1 to begin a four-game series against the Modesto Nuts, but will quickly leave Municipal Stadium four days later for a season-long 13-game road trip from May 5-18. The Giants have played 10 out of their first 14 games at home to open the 2009 campaign.
San Jose Using The Long Ball... The Giants have hit 17 home runs in their first 14 games this season - second in the California League (one behind High Desert). Eight different players have gone deep with Brandon Crawford leading the way with four round-trippers while Buster Posey and Angel Villalona have each connected for three homers.
Crawford, Posey Share Offensive Player Of The Week Award... Shortstop Brandon Crawford and catcher Buster Posey shared the California League Offensive Player of the Week award as was announced on Monday. Crawford hit .421 (16-for-38) with three homers and eight RBI's for the week ending on April 19 while Posey batted .405 (17-for-42) with three home runs and 10 RBI's.
Posey Leads A Potent Offense... Catcher Buster Posey has been swinging a hot bat throughout the opening two weeks of the 2009 season. The former first round draft pick is 18-for-38 (.474 AVG) with three home runs in his last 10 games and is currently tied for third in the league in batting average, tied for fourth in RBI's (12), tied for third in hits (20) and first in on-base percentage (.500). Posey won the Golden Spikes Award at Florida State University last spring before the Giants selected him with the fifth overall pick in the draft.
Barnes To Start Series Opener On The Mound... 21-year old left-hander Scott Barnes is slated to start on the mound in Thursday's series opener against the Mavericks. Barnes made his season debut on April 11 against Stockton and worked five scoreless innings with just three hits allowed to earn the victory. The southpaw then suffered the loss in his second start against the Ports on April 17 when he was tagged for four runs (all earned) on four hits over four-plus innings. The four runs allowed marked his career-high. Barnes was rated the #9 prospect in the San Francisco Giants organization according to Baseball America entering the 2009 season.

The next scheduled television broadcast is on Friday, May 1st against the Modesto Nuts.
High Desert Mavericks... The Mavericks, an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, enter Thursday's game with an 11-3 record this season to lead the South Division. The Mavericks saw their six-game winning streak snapped two nights ago with a loss to Rancho Cucamonga, but High Desert rebounded yesterday afternoon to post a 6-3 win over the Quakes and take two-of-three in the series. The Mavericks lead the California League in batting average (.307), runs scored (6.0 per game) and home runs (18) while their pitching staff is sixth in the league with a 3.89 team ERA. High Desert boasts three of the top nine hitters in the California League in Alex Liddi (3rd, .400), Joe Dunigan (6th, .383) and Juan Diaz (9th, .370). Left-hander Edward Paredes is slated to make the start on the mound Thursday. Paredes, who signed as a non-drafted free agent with the Mariners in 2005, is 1-0 with a 5.87 ERA through two starts this season. This series marks San Jose's only regular season visit to Adelanto.
