Inland Empire 66ers News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, CA - In search of a series sweep of the Lancaster JetHawks, the Inland Empire 66ers came up short, losing by a score of 4-3. The teams combined for 29 strikeouts, with Chris Withrow fanning 10 JetHawks while Lancaster starter Chris Hicks struck out nine 66ers.
The JetHawks (4-10) jumped on top in the second inning and never looked back. Jason Castro reached on a one out walk and was driven in on a double by Koby Clemens.
Lancaster tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Brian Pellegrini hit a no-doubt-about-it blast on the second pitch he saw from reliever Joe Jones well over the wall in left for his seventh homer of the year. With two outs and David Flores on second, Chris Minaker hit an RBI single up the middle to make it a 3-0 ballgame.
Scott Van Slyke went four-for-five on the night and was a home run shy of the cycle.
The 66ers (6-8) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth after Scott Van Slyke led off with a triple against Chia-Jen Lo. Two outs later, Lo uncorked a wild pitch while facing Rafael Ynoa, allowing Van Slyke to score.
Van Slyke continued his hot night, getting another leadoff hit in the eighth, this time a double off of Reid Kelly. He would come around to score again on a single to left off the bat of Steve Caseres, making it 3-2, JetHawks.
Lancaster added an insurance run in the ninth when Justin Orenduff walked in a run with the bases loaded to make it 4-2, JetHawks. That run would prove valuable as Eduardo Perez hit a triple in the bottom of the inning and scored on a single from Tommy Giles.
Hicks (1-1) allowed five hits and two walks while striking out nine in five scoreless innings.
Withrow (1-1) fanned 10 while allowing one run on three hits and two walks in five innings.
The 66ers now pack it up for a four-game series with the Lake Elsinore Storm. Tim Sexton (1-0, 0.82) takes the ball for the 66ers while Wynn Pelzer (1-0, 5.00) gets the call for the Storm. Inland Empire returns Tuesday, April 28 against the High Dessert Mavericks for a $2 Tuesday. Fans can get $2 seats anywhere in the park, excluding Executive Box, $2 parking, and $2 beers.
