SOCKERS FINISH BACK-TO-BACK IN ONTARIO
The San Diego Sockers (8-3) travel to Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario for the second time this season, taking on the Ontario Fury with a 4:05pm Sunday afternoon kickoff. This is the third of four meetings between the Sockers and Fury, with San Diego leading the series 2-0 and 21-11 on goal aggregate. The Fury are coming off a 1-1 road trip in Central California, losing to Turlock 6-5 (OT) before edging Bay Area 10-9.
LAST GAME: SOCKERS 13, BAY AREA 1
Hat tricks by Jeff Hughes and Kraig Chiles powered an easy 13-1 win over Bay Area Saturday night at the Valley View Casino Center. A Military Appreciation Night crowd of 3,728 saw Brian Farber, Aaron Susi and Anthony Medina each net a pair of goals for the Sockers, who scored the final twelve goals unanswered. Chris Toth made 13 saves in goal for the win and saw only one goal get past him, on a shot deflected off Farber's leg.
SANTOS IMPRESSIVE IN DEBUT
The Sockers have added to an injury-ravaged defensive line with the signing of defender Jonatan Santos, a 29-year-old MISL veteran from Brazil. Santos spent the last six seasons with the MISL Milwaukee Wave, earning a pair of championships. In his Sockers debut Santos did not record a point but displayed his technical skill and banged the post twice with a solid shot.
McNELEY BACK IN THE LINEUP
San Diego defender Evan McNeley is ready to make his return to the Sockers' starting fourteen after missing the past two games with a toe injury. McNeley, who ranked second on the Sockers with 14 points at the time of his injury, was hurt on a hard tackle in Tijuana by the Toros but avoided a break and was warmed up and ready for play on Saturday. The Sockers held him out for precautionary reasons.
CHILES CHASING GOAL LEAD
Three-time defending PASL MVP Kraig Chiles is within one goal of the PASL goal scoring lead entering play on Saturday. His 25 goals in 11 games trails Cleveland striker Stefan Ostergren (26 goals in 12 games) and is tied with Chicago's Efrain Martinez (25 goals in 10 games). Chiles has led the PASL in goals the past three seasons and set league records last year with 56 goals and 72 points.
VELEZ IS BACK AND REDDY READY
San Diego defender Eduardo Velez missed three quarters of the Las Vegas game after being shown a red card for elbowing, and was forced to sit out Saturday's win over Bay Area Rosal as well. The PASL offered no further penalty so Velez will return to the starting fourteen today against Ontario. It was Eddie's second red card suspension of the season.
A COSTLY LOSS TO LAS VEGAS
Normally it's a visitor to Las Vegas who leaves with their pockets empty. Last Saturday it was the visitor from Las Vegas who left San Diego with all the chips. The Legends' win over San Diego on January 11th set negative PASL records for the Sockers for goals allowed (12) and biggest margin of loss (3). In addition, while the Sockers and Legends split their season series 1-1, late Las Vegas goals against a sixth attacker formation allowed the Legends to capture the season aggregate 17-16, earning the tiebreaker in the Pacific Division. The loss snapped a 35-game Pacific Division winning streak for the Sockers.
UPON FURTHER REVIEW: HELLO DIEGO!
Reports (from this space) of Diego Rovira's absence were greatly exaggerated. The Sockers midfielder was indeed in the starting lineup on Saturday against Bay Area and chipped in a season-best three assists. The newly relocated Rovira (moved to the Bay Area) will start again today but miss the Mexico trip next week.
OPPONENT'S PROFILE: ONTARIO FURY (4-7)
The expansion Ontario Fury started 2-0, lost six straight and have since won two of their last three. The Fury have had multiple lineups this season but tend to bring their top players against San Diego. Brazilian midfielder Tiguinho has a team-best 11 assists and 17 points. Tino Nunez has 11 goals and 15 points in 6 games.
