San Diego Riptide Update
May 7, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2)
San Diego Riptide News Release
LAST WEEK: The âTide took the week off for their first of two bye weeks for the 2004 season. The previous week they garnered their first win of the year, defeating the Central Valley Coyotes, 59-34.
THIS WEEK: The âTide take on the division-leading Hawaiian Islanders when they return to action this week at the Sports Arena. With a win this week, the Riptide can pull to within a game of first place. Not bad for a team that started 0-3.
The âTide offense has been rolling, increasing their scoring output in each of their four games. QB Kane Claunch has played particularly well after being benched in Week 1 against Arkansas. Claunch returned the next week after backup Kevin Feterik went down with a hand injury, throwing five scores in relief against the Green Bay Blizzard. He didn't stop there either, throwing another five TD passes in each of the next two games as well, giving him 18 on the season â fourth best in the league.
Hawaii is led by former Utah standout Darrell Arceneaux, who ranks in the top 10 in af2 in virtually every passing category in addition to running for a league-best 81 yards this season. Stopping the multi-dimensional attack of Arceneaux will be a major focus for Coach Mouse Davis and the Riptide if they hope to snap a four-game losing streak to the defending division champs.
STANDINGS: The Riptide currently sit in third place in the National West Division, one-and-a-half games behind both Hawaii and Bakersfield. A win for San Diego this week, however, could pull them to within a half-game of the Islanders and just one game of the idle Blitz.
COX TO CARRY NEXT TWO âTIDE HOME GAMES
SAN DIEGO â The Riptide will broadcast their next two home games on Channel 4 â San Diego. The first of these two games will come this Saturday, May 8, against the first-place Hawaiian Islanders and will be re-broadcast on Monday, May 10 at 8 p.m..
Both games will kick off at 7 p.m. PDT and will be carried on Channel 4 â San Diego, who also carries games for the Padres and Gulls, among others. The play-by-play and color commentary will be done by Mighty 1090 personalities Billy Ray Smith and Scott Kaplan. In addition, Bill Werndl will handle all on-field interviews and sideline reporting.
In addition to this week's game against Hawaii, Channel 4 will also broadcast the Riptide's May 22 game against the two-time af2 champion Quad City Steamwheelers.
The Riptide will also be offering special ticket packages for these games. Fans will have the opportunity to sit in the "Scott and BR Section" in the lower end-zone for just $10 per ticket. The "Scott and BR Section" is sure to be among the rowdiest and loudest in the building and will be up-close-and-personal for every score as well as the award-winning Riptide Dance Team. To get your tickets for the "Scott and BR Section", just visit the Sports Arena box office and tell them you're with Scott and Billy Ray.
