San Antonio Takes Monday's Doubleheader at Hammons Field

Springfield, MO - The San Antonio Missions logged wins in both halves of the doubleheader against the Springfield Cardinals on Monday - 7-6 in 10 innings in Game 1 and 6-3 in seven innings in Game 2 - before 4,327 fans at Hammons Field.

Game 1 -

The Missions claimed the first game of the doubleheader, 7-6, in 10 innings against the Cardinals.

San Antonio (7-4, 43-38) swung in front early with a pair of home runs against LHP Kyle Hald in the bottom of the first. 2B Adam Buschini led off with a solo home run, before a two-run shot later in the inning from CF Rymer Liriano for the 3-0 advantage.

The Cardinals (5-6, 39-42) came right back in the bottom of the first against RHP Matt Branham. LF Mike O'Neill led off with a single, before a double belted off the wall by SS Aledmys Diaz. Two outs later, 3B Patrick Wisdom swatted a game-tying three-run home run, evening the score at 3-3.

Springfield then charged in front in the bottom of the second frame. With CF Starlin Rodriguez on at second base and two down, LF Mike O'Neill ripped an RBI single. After Diaz was hit by a pitch, C Cody Stanley came through with an RBI base hit to score O'Neill for the 5-3 lead.

The Missions dealt the next blow in the top of the third. With two on and two down, 3B Cody Overbeck drove a three-run home run to lift the Missions back in front, 6-5.

Stanley, though, refused to let the Cardinals stay down for too long, striking again in the bottom of the fifth. Leading off the inning, the All-Star Game MVP belted a game-tying solo home run to right field, sqauring the score once again at 6-6.

Both bullpens kept the tie intact until the top of the 10th frame. Facing LHP Ryan Sherriff (L, 2-3), Overbeck knocked his second homer of the game, a solo shot, to propel the Missions into the 7-6 advantage.

After a pair of scoreless innings by San Antonio RHP John Hussey (W, 2-0) in the eighth and ninth, LHP Frank Garces (S, 7) closed the 7-6 win for the Missions with a scoreless bottom of the 10th.

Game 2 -

Both offenses struck late, but the Missions took the second half of the doubleheader against the Cardinals, 6-3, in seven innings.

After Springfield RHP Sam Gaviglio (L, 3-9) and San Antonio RHP Bryce Morrow (W, 1-1) alternated three scoreless innings apiece, the Missions (8-4, 44-38) broke through in the top of the fourth inning. LF Rymer Liriano worked a leadoff walk, before swiping his way to second base. A groundout moved Liriano to third, before he darted home on an RBI single from RF Yeison Asencio for the 1-0 lead.

San Antonio added some insurance in the top of the sixth inning. With Gaviglio still on the mound and one away, Liriano and 3B Adam Buschini both knocked singles. After an intentional walk to Asencio, Gaviglio gave way to LHP Lee Stoppelman. C Robert Kral, though, won the battle against Stoppelman with a three-run double to center field, clearing the bases for the 4-0 advantage.

The Cardinals (5-7, 39-43) cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one away, 2B Breyvic Valera singled himself on, before RF Curt Smith crushed a two-run home run to right field, making it just a 4-2 gap on the board.

The Missions, however, responded with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. After a walk, a hit batter and a base hit loaded the bases with no outs, RHP Mitch Harris took over on the mound for Springfield. He induced a 6-2-3 double play that retired a runner at the plate and at first, leaving two men at second and third with two down. But Buschini came through again, striking with a two-run single to pad the advantage back to four runs, 6-2.

The Cardinals kept fighting with another attempted rally in the bottom of the seventh. SS Matt Williams sparked the charge with a single, quickly then taking second base on a wild pitch. CF Starlin Rodriguez then brought Williams home with an RBI single to bring Springfield within only three runs of tying it. One out later, pinch-hitting OF David Popkins worked a walk, followed by a fielder's choice that had two men on with two down. Representing the game-tying run, Valera was retired by LHP Luis De La Cruz for the final out of the contest, as the Missions hung on for the 6-3 win.
