San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio earned a split of its four game series against Midland with a 1-0 victory in front of 5,548 Saturday night at Wolff Stadium.
Saturday featured another terrific pitcher's duel between San Antonio's Seth Simmons and Midland's Raul Alcantara.
Simmons, who was coming off a career-high six-inning performance in his last start Monday night at Springfield, repeated the feat Saturday against the first-place RockHounds with an even more impressive outing. The Winston-Salem, NC native did not allow a hit until Brett Vertigan led off the sixth with an infield single. Simmons (1-2) allowed another hit in the frame, but kept the 'Hounds off the board. The 28-year-old hurler struck out five against three walks.
San Antonio scored the only run it would need off Alcantara in the fifth. Luis Tejada led off the frame with an infield single to third. After Chase Jensen laid down a sac bunt, Tejada would move to third when Alcantara uncorked a wild pitch. Catcher Rocky Gale brought in the game's only run when he followed with a groundout to the right side. Alcantara (5-6) fanned eight in defeat and did not walk a batter. San Antonio finished with just four hits in the game.
The rest of the game belonged to the vaunted Missions bullpen. The trio of Jose Torres, Jimmy Brasoban and Jason Jester (13th save) each put up a zero over the last three innings to complete San Antonio's sixth shutout of the season and its first since June 25 at Midland.
San Antonio (10-12, 32-60) begins a four-game series against Frisco Sunday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM. The Missions have yet to announce a starter. Frisco counters with right-hander Luis Ortiz (1-4, 4.06).
