San Antonio Missions News Release

TONIGHT'S GAME: Tonight is the finale of a four-game series between the San Antonio Missions and the Midland Rock- Hounds at Wolff Stadium. San Antonio (34-33), which enters play third in the South Division, has won nine of their last 12 home games. Midland (36-31), which was eliminated from the first-half title race last night, enters second in the South, 3.5 games behind Frisco (39-27). The RoughRiders are headed to the postseason for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

A win tonight would earn San Antonio a split of this four-game series. The Missions are 6-9 against the 'Hounds this season and have dropped five of the seven played in San Antonio.

PITCHING MATCHUP: On the hill for San Antonio tonight is Bryce Morrow, who will be making his Double-A debut.

Morrow, 26, arrives from High-A Lake Elsinore, where he was 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA in 19 games (five starts). San Diego signed Bryce as a non-drafted free agent on July 24, 2013. After signing, Morrow went 4-2 with a 4.81 ERA in seven starts for the Storm. Prior to joining the Padres' organization, Morrow had spent three seasons in the Frontier (Indy.) League pitching for both Traverse City and Evansville. In 36 games (30 starts) in independent ball, Bryce went 15-10 with a 3.86 ERA. He played his college ball at Central Michigan University, where was 9-15 with a 4.30 ERA in 72 games (25 starts).

Opposing Morrow will be fellow righty Shawn Haviland, who is 3-4 with a 3.64 ERA in 10 starts this season. Haviland's only start against San Antonio this year came at the Wolff on April 26 where he allowed just three hits and one walk, while fanning two in seven and two-thirds scoreless innings. Oakland selected Haviland in the 33rd round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Harvard University.

LAST GAME: Three homers from the offense and another stellar start by Juan Oramas helped San Antonio cruise past Midland 9-1 Friday night at Wolff Stadium. Following a tough loss Thursday night, the Missions got off to a great start Friday with a five-run second inning. The rally began on a crucial, two-out error by Midland starter Drew Granier. Cody Overbeck hit a routine comebacker to the mound that was fielded by Granier, but his throw to first baseman Miles Head sailed high and into his team's bullpen, allowing the inning to continue. After an Adam Buschini walk, Brian Bixler gave San Antonio a 1-0 lead with an RBI single to left. Granier compounded his problems when he walked Reymond Fuentes to load the bases. That brought up Yeison Asencio, who cleared the bases with a towering blast onto the berm in left. It was San Antonio's third grand slam of 2014. After Midland got on the board with a Head RBI single in the third, San Antonio responded in their half of the frame with an Overbeck sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the fourth, Asencio took Granier (3-3) deep again, this time an opposite-field solo shot that gave the Missions a 7-1 lead. The offensive eruption was more than enough for Oramas, who allowed just one run on six hits and a walk, while striking out a season-high eight over a season- high, tying seven innings. In three starts for the Missions, Oramas (2-0) has pitched to a minuscule 0.48 ERA to go along with a K:BB ratio of 20:6 over 18.2 innings. Pinch-hitter Lee Orr pushed the lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer to left off former Missions' lefty Andrew Werner. Later in the frame, Buschini capped scoring with an RBI double. The bullpen duo of Frank Garces and newcomer Joe Church each tossed a scoreless frame to finish off the Missions' victory.

POWER SURGE: The Missions have hit 50 home runs in their last 44 games after hitting just 12 in their first 23 contests. Since April 29 (start of 44-game run), San Antonio leads all of Double-A in homers and is ninth in all of MiLB. San Antonio has hit 62 homers in 2014, which is the most at the Double-A level.

HITTING SHOES ON: In their last six games, San Antonio is hitting .311 (68-for-219) with eight homers and 45 runs scored. The 1-4 spot in the lineup has hit a sizzling .397 (27-for-68) over its last four contests. Since May 17, the Missions lead the TL in both runs (135) and SLG (.419), while ranking third in both batting (.273) and walks (75).

DEFENSIVE ISSUES: Miscues in the field continue to be a theme for the Missions. Since June 3, San Antonio has committed a full-season MiLB-high 20 errors. In each of those 11 games they have committed at least one error. The Missions are on pace to commit 29 more errors than last year's squad (178:149) and 31 more than the 2012 team. Both of those clubs finished last in the TL in fielding. The 178 errors would be the club's most since the 1999 squad committed 202.

HAHN SILENCES METS: The reason for Morrow's arrival was due to San Diego recalling Jesse Hahn. The right- hander made his second big league start this afternoon at Citi Field in New York and was sensational, allowing just one hit and three walks, while striking out seven over a career-high six shutout innings. The Padres currently lead the Mets 5-0 in the ninth. In 11 games (eight starts) for the Missions, Hahn was 2-1 with a 2.11 ERA and a K:BB ratio of 33:14 over 38.1 innings.
