Missions Walk off 'Hounds on Overbeck's Suicide Squeeze
June 14, 2014 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
Cody Overbeck's suicide squeeze in the bottom of the ninth gave San Antonio a thrilling, 2-1 win over Midland in Saturday night's series finale at Wolff Stadium.
Bryce Morrow took the hill Saturday night for San Antonio in his Double-A debut. The 26-year-old, right-hander showed no nerves, scattering eight hits and just one run over a career-high, tying seven innings. Morrow struck out a pair in his final inning of work, finishing his debut with a career-high eight strikeouts against just one walk. The only run Midland managed to plate off Morrow came in the third on a Conner Crumbliss sacrifice fly.
Unfortunately for Morrow, he was not able to pick up a win Saturday thanks to an equally impressive outing from Midland starter Shawn Haviland. The Missions managed just two hits off Haviland in his seven innings on the hill. However, one of those hits was an Austin Hedges RBI double that tied the game at one in the fourth.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth, but not before Midland missed a golden chance to take the lead in the top of the frame. With two on and one out, Dusty Coleman hit a ball up the middle. Second baseman Adam Buschini fielded the ball and stepped on second for the second out of the inning before trying to complete the double play at first. However his throw was in the dirt and got past Overbeck. Quickly, Overbeck recovered the ball and alertly threw home to Hedges, who tagged out Anthony Aliotti to end the threat.
The bottom of the ninth began with Rymer Liriano getting plunked by a Ryan Dull pitch. After Dull (3-3) walked Jason Hagerty, Midland went to the pen and summoned closer Seth Frankoff. Hedges followed with a sacrifice bunt, moving both runners up a base. Not wanting to risk extra innings, manager Rich Dauer rolled the dice and called for a suicide squeeze. Overbeck executed his task perfectly, placing the ball past Frankoff as Liriano sped home with the game-winning run.
Overbeck's heroics made a winner out of Luis De La Cruz (2-5), who tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
San Antonio (35-33) resumes their season-long, 12-game homestand Sunday with the first of four against Corpus Christi (33-35). First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Josh Geer (2-6, 4.40) will get the ball for the Missions, while the Hooks counter with lefty David Rollins (0-2, 3.21).
